a friend's asked me to post this, she's scared of HHO, the daft mare. ;) ;)
would a garden shredder be up to cutting hay to make chaff, or does it need hard stuff (twigs etc) to work properly? she doesn't want to shell out for one and then it not be capable of doing the job.
any other ideas, or does anyone know of anywhere that sells chaff-cutters, or have an old one lying about unused (fat chance i know...) i've done Searches already but everything's 2 yrs out of date...
thanks for any info.

Either E-bay, vintage chaff cutters come up from time to time and you could get one for a tenner or so, or there is collective sale at Bicker roundabout next week, she might be able to pick one up there.
I would be worried that a garden shredder will mulch the hay.

I've got one here, that I used with a long belt to a stationary engine. Its still sitting in my hay shed in the dry, and wih all our health problems, I can't see it getting used again. I'd want quite a bit more than a tenner though!

From recent experience of shredding garden waste, yes I think it could well so it BUT it will not be quick! I had the loan of one from neighbours. They actually use it for crushing apples for cider! I used it on a selection of materials from Ivy and nettles to decent branches. The only thing you might find is that is blocks up quite quickly as when I was shredding smaller stuff it did get blocked more regularly. It also didn't chop finer stuff to a consistant length which may be a problem for your friend?
