Chaff or Ready Grass?

Hi all,

Going to be changing my horses feed as he is currently resting for a few months, and when back in work will only be doing light work with some hacking. He is currently on Top Spec comprehensive balancer and alfa a oil.

Because these are quite energy boosting and fattening feeds, I was thinking of switching the alfa a oil to either chaff or ready grass. I like top spec, and since he isn't in work I've just halved the amount he gets, and when he is back in work I will up the amount again.

So do you think I should add a chaff or ready grass to his feed instead? Or something else?

Hit me with your wisdom!

The dried chopped grasses have similar DE & protein levels to Alfa Oil as they are cut & dried at an early growth stage.
Do you actually need to feed a chaff along side the balancer?
If you do (other supplement carrier for ex.) Have a look at Dengie mollasses free.

Readigrass and Just Grass are high energy feeds. I give either brand (I find both are the same and just buy whatever is the cheapest at whatever feed shop I am at) to my TB in December till the spring grass comes for some extra energy in the winter and to keep her weight on when the fields turn to brown muddy clay. She does go nuts when I put her on the grasses but I don't mind as I like her a bit sharp for schooling and we go galloping at the weekends any ways.

If you don't want anything that gives too much energy or is fattening, I would not recommend any of the cut grasses. Maybe a chaff like what Spiller's does like Cool Fibre or something.

Readigrass is quite high energy...I would go for something like hi-fi molassess free or good doer.
Also, balancers are intended to be a complete feed fed at recommended rates. If you are not feeding the recommended rate I'd suggest cutting it out altogether as there's not much point?
You would switch to something like healthy hooves which is chaff with nuts already added, but is supposedly low energy

Readi grass is like feeding them spring grass high energy and sugar, so I would feed hifi no mollasses as the others have said, I feed this with pura beet and they love it.

Thanks everyone! I hadn't thought about healthy hooves.

The good thing with top spec is you can change the amounts fed to suit what type of work the horse is doing, which is why I have halved the amounts he is getting, and will up the amount when he is back in work. I will try switching the alfa a oil for healthy hooves :)
