Hi all, my lovely old boy has unfortunately started to have trouble with his hay, so am in the process of sorting him hay replacement. Have been on the Dengie website, and am interested in giving him combined HiFi Senior, Pure Grass & Grass Pellets. Ideally, i would like to mix all three bags into a storage box so i can just shovel straight into a tub rather than scooping from each bag each day, has anyone else done this? and if so, what sort of storage box have you used? Was looking at those large garden furniture boxes......??

Freezer here to but I think you might have a problem of separation if you mix grassnut with chaff in a large container My guess would be one would sink and the other would not mix well. I used to mix oats with proper broad bran years ago but still got some meals mostly oats or mostly bran

the effort needed to mix three sacks together, far far outweighs the effort needed to take 3 individual scoops out. You could do a week worth at time, in plastic bags stored in a feed bin. You could actually do a months worth at a time if the fancy took you.

This is what I’d do. I mix two lots of nuts for my pigs. It would be hilarious to watch because me and OH hold a bag each, count down from 3 and then try and empty the bags into the bin at the same speed. Even with that method they don’t mix perfectly well, so I’d stick to either the normal way or mix a
each meals food individually in a large sandwich bag.

maybe Tupperware to save on single use plastics ?

I agree that sounds like much more effort than individual bins. I have loads for all my feeds and don’t find it any hassle to take a scoop out of each. But mixing up a weeks worth in tubs might suit you better.

My old boy was on box rest and hay replacer for a couple of months a few years ago. The mix was devised by Leahurst and he was on Happy Hoof, Hifi and grass chaff in 1:1:1 ratio. When he got a bit well covered on it I swapped to hifi lite in 2:3:1 ratio. If I was to go down that route again but wanted more weight on I would use an oil added chaff (such as Alfa-a Oil). We were getting through 8 sacks of feed a week (800kg horse) so mixing in bins would've been too hard. I used to have the massive 75l trugs and just add a few scoops of each, mix, add a few more scoops, mix and top off with a scoop of the hifi when the trug was full.
I have always had mice problems but because my "stock" was turning over so fast I didn't have the usual problems. I'd look at the comparted metal feed bins (GALVANISED FEED BINS WITH THREE COMPARTMENTS. HORSE CHICKEN DOG CAT,STORAGE 644221073582 | eBay) if I was doing hay replacement for a smaller horse.
