Chaff Without Alfalfa?

Dengie molasses free hi lite is great, to make you own chaff you need good clean oat straw,difficult to course, I would rather pay for the real stuff but I use very little hi end branded hard feed.
I think the alfalfa chaff is better value and has more feed value, plus you are introducing variety.
 
just grass, readigrass, supreme grass are all grass based chaffs with no alfalfa
straw based would be some Mollichaffs and my feed merchants have something called Ossi chaff, which is basically straw covered in molasses.

We have ossi chaff, as we live near where it is made, it does come in a range of different types. Our mare loves it, as she's in her thirties and needs something that doesn't require too much chewing with her poor teeth.
 
Hey thanks everyone, I didn't realize I had so many options!

I know alfalfa is a good product for my arab x but the tb needs an alfalfa free one, that's why I asked :)

Alfalfa is safe for laminitics, it's just that it contains more protein than straw. It's the mollasses in chaff that's unsafe for laminitics.

Lami friendly feeds do often contain both alfafa and molasses so careful reading of the ingredients is necessary! - some don't even tell you clearly there so a call to the brand advice line is necessary in order to deduce what you are feeding your horse! If you want both alfafa and molasses free then you can use the chopped dried grass (of which there are many types mentioned above) or the ossi feed chaff mentioned too (http://www.ossichaff.com/sugarfree.html). Alfafa and sugar are incredibly common additives to chaff so it is hard to find something without!!!
Ossi chaff is top of my must buy list thanks to the person above who mentioned it - a proper old school chaff of straw and hay (and most importantly - nothing else!!!) has been on my 'try to find' list for ages!! Thank you martlin!!
 
My vet told me that my laminitic could not eat alfalfa as it could cause a laminitis attack! But by no means am I an expert, I feed safe and sound and I checked the ingredients for this so I believe that there is no alfalfa in it.
