How does the chalk blocks compare to the powdered, and how would you use either product?

My blue and white cob has a nasty stable stain on his stifle/thigh that I just can't shift, despite washing it daily and with every 'whitening' product under the sun - as he lies in the same position every night, the stain just returns every morning, and now has built up to the extent nothing seems to shift it :(.

It wouldn't bother me too much, but as he is currently hunting twice a week, needs to look presentable, so was wondering if chalk may help?

Never used the block, but on my Connemara bog pony I mix chalk powder with water to a thick paste apply liberally and leave it on til the next morning when I brush it out :)

How much bedding are you using? Stable stains are usually a result of lying in a pile of dung - but those on hocks, elbows etc are often a result of insufficient bedding, cushioning the area from the wet or dunged bedding.

For white I make up a mix of Curash baby powder and water - scrub it in with a toothbrush and leave to dry - comes up fluorescent white when dry.

Comes with a warning though - make sure you remember which brush you used otherwise you'll brush white powder through the coloured bits!

I never really believed there was a difference until I used the powder by supreme products. Now I won't go back, it's worth the money.

Ben on a normal good day:

Thanks all.

He is bedded on straw and has a thick bed, but is also a mucky and wet chap, so does churn it up. I have tried him on shavings and tbh there is not much difference to the staining, and as straw is cheaper, have stuck to that!

Tnavas - is the baby powder you use in supermarkets or would Johnsons do the same?

I will have a look at the Supreme products Queenbee.

Yes I get mine from the supermarket and I think you can get Curash in UK - its the one with zinc in it especially for nappy rash.

They were a godsend to me, the first photo doesn't do justice to just how grubby he gets, his tail and legs turn positively black with stains normally! Regarding the shampoo, I always add a good slug of gentian violet to blue shampoo, just make sure you massage it in until the Colour has gone and it's just white suds,

I've used Supreme Products as well and they are good but I don't think anything does the job brilliantly on a reallyground in stain :(

I don't necessarily agree that insufficient bedding is the cause either - with two greys I've had plenty of experience and no matter how thick the bed is, they still get them. One in particular has a routine of weeing and then lying down straight away, before the wee has had any chance of soaking in!

One thing I've found that's made a huge difference though is wood pellet bedding. I've used it for the first time this winter and, for the first time ever, neither has any stable stains to speak of. It seems to absorb the wee so quicky and even seems to draw the moisture of of the poo so there's nothing to soak into their coats. I LOVE them.

Hmmmm - food for thought annagain. I have always had problems with his bedding as he is so wet, and have considered wood pellets, but put off by having to buy them in bulk just in case they are not suitable.

What is frustrating is that he has a huge stable, and a big bed, but always manages to find the muckiest bit to lie in! His bed does not actually look too bad in the morning, so don't know how he manages it...

Up until xmas he was living out 24/7 and tbh the mud was much easier to wash off, but not having much grass left now, had to bring him back in at night to preserve the field.

Other than his colour, he is the most perfect little horse, so do forgive him - it is just annoying that every day the bucket and sponge have to come out, and do worry it is not good for him to be constantly washed.

Roll on spring, 24/7 turnout and drier conditions!

This sounds just like me all round. I was scared to take the plunge with it too, but I'm so glad I did. I put unsoaked pellets where he weeks and cover it with a thin layer of soaked stuff and if I didn't know it was there, I'd barely notice it as the unsoaked stuff it so thirsty it draws it all away from the top through to the bottom of the bed.

Mine has a huge 18'x14' stable and I bed down about hte back 8' so he has a 8' x 14' bed. He stands at the front either to eat or look out so he never poos in his bed (share horse does hence poo comment in my earlier post) which is fab but he wees in the same spot every night and obviously lies down the in the same plance and same way every night as he's only ever got a stain on his right flank. The left hand side of his bed literally hasn't been touched all winter, but I replace the right hand side completely every week and this is the side he chooses to sleep on!

I'd much rather mud than wee too and yes with both mine and my share horse, the only thing I'd change about either of them is their colour - and A's melanomas but that part of the colour issue too.

Try this stuff, a friend uses it on a 17.2hh event horse with 4 huge socks! It covers really well.

I've tried all the stain removal shampoos and the supreme products powder and I've not found anything better than cheap tesco shampoo then rub a chalk block on the stains while they're still wet. Works the same as mixing up the pastes but much cheaper and much less mess! I think the shampoo would probably be too harsh for very regular washing though, I only use it once every few months as we don't compete

I agree that the most committed can get poo stains crusted on no matter how thick & clean the bedding! I have 4 grey connies that are always flat out in their stables, contentedly snoring in the pooiest bits! Tresemme shampoo is good & I find that linseed also seems to make the grot slide off coats a bit better

Any chalk on to wet coat does a good job

I haven't seen Curash in the UK for quite some years but I expect it still out there, it was in tiny shakers though and expensive for the size

I do know that a couple of the show producers keep the coat on white legs shorter and blend it in where the lines are between colours as that way the white parts can be more easily cleaned and the chalk sits better

That size though does mine for several shows - and far cheaper than the commercial brands. I've just cleaned out my show grooming box and biffed out some left over from the season - its gone hard. Smells gorgeous too. I make up the whole shaker in a tupperware container it then stays usable whenever I need it.

Queenbee would you mind sharing the secret of that tail please? I am, for the first time in my life, dealing with a grey whose tail looks like the one in the top photo. She lives out and the last thing I want to get into is permanent tail bags.

I use wood pellets but don't buy in bulk. My Local feed merchant does Verdo at 4.75 per 15kg bag. Might be worth asking around?

I also have a grey. I use a wood pellet base with shavings on top. She is definitely cleaner!
