I like chambons, for their purpose they work well and give a clear message to any giraffe like horses, i find after a few times they no longer need them, find their correct way of going etc
I have never used anything else on the lunge, except side reins.
I've only ever used a pessoa on a boss' horse, and only ever used a chambon on mine.
I prefer the chambon as think f the horse isn't going forwards enough thats what the voice aids/lunge whip are for not a trace around the back legs. I think most horses can work well in a chambon, although I do occasionally worry when he goes very low and the chambon gets close to the floor
My gelding is rising 6 but is green and doesn't seem to have much balance, he is also stiff. He is currently lunged in side reins but I have been considering using something else. I have never used either a pessoa or chambon but don't like the idea that the pessoa can jab them in the mouth as he is already very sensitive.
Do you think the chambon would be worth using on him or should I just stick to the side reins?
i use a pessoa twice a week and wouldnt use anything else! i feel as though side reins can make them very on the forehand and they forget about their behind...
I think that side reins can be usefl for horses that already know how to work properly, and will work in them, but end up ime, just squashing the front end of horses that won't work properly.
A chambon really encourages them to drop down and swing from behind. I bought mine off ebay for not very much.
hmmm, i have used a chambon and find it very good but have also just bought off a rip off pessoa as my horse isnt using his back end properly so got told to use this. however i must agree, the movement of the back end jabs him in the mouth which i dont like as its not a nice experience for him, im going to try taking the bum bit off the pessoa and use that and the chambon so i know he isnt slacking behind!
The Animal Health Trust at Newmarket are doing research into the pessoa and so far it is very favourable, they have found that horses move much better in them and use themselves in a better way and so build up more top line, I will post results when the tests are finished.
I went to a yard yesterday and commented on how much better three of the horses were looking, better top lines and moving better behind, turns out she started lunging them in a pessoa about 4 weeks ago, these results back up the AHT findings so far.
Personally cant see what a chambon does as seems to make no difference to the horse at all so would rather use side reins in not in pessoa.
We use a pessoa a couple of times a week on most of the show horses. We find they move well using it, build up more top line and even the more difficult ones are happy to use it. Been using the pessoa for 4 years now.
I agree with CotswoldSJ.
I think a lot of people have the pessoa too tight, hence pulling them in the mouth when hindleg is in stance phase. I'd like to see one used more loosely to see if it's possible to avoid that, but haven't yet...
you could always put an elastic tail bandage around the horses quarters and put on a chambon so you don't get the mouth being pulled but you have something to remind the horse to use his bum?
i put the tail bandage on all of mine now when lunging or long-reining and it has made a difference.

It is possibe
Have just started using one on ours, very loosely, the big lad would certainly object to being jarred in the mouth, he may stand over 18hh but he is mentally quite fragile, requiring very sympathetic hands, and simplistic bitting, if jabbed he would have a sense of humour failure! He has very quickly learnt to work with the pessoa on the lowest setting, and so far showing an aptitude for working from quaters to head, freely and willingly on the loosest setting only (it is the loosest setting he only just fits in it
)
Will look froward to seeing the results from the AHT
Chambon from the point of view that they can still really stretch down in front without getting jabbed in the mouth, in fact, with no restriction at all. I personally haven't used a pessoa on any of mine but have seen them used many times, I don't like them, they are restricting and as another poster said they are just the same as draw reins with a bum strap you'd be better off getting on and riding your horse than spending too much time on circles.
I tried a chambon years ago on my mare but I couldn't get on with it - when she stretched down long and low the stretchy rubber piece going between the legs would be worryingly slack and I thought she would catch a foot in it! I was delighted when a friend broke it and gave me the money back!!
I've always preferred a pessoa, it's very versatile and I lunge in a soft rubber snaffle.

completley agree!
the problem with side reins apart from those mentioned above is that they let the horse learn to lean, and can make a insensitive mouth.
chambon all the way, with something slung round the back!
