Chancer is 3 this month and did his first hack on Saturday - started leading him off Cairo as usual then when satisfied he was happy, handed the leadrein to the young teenager I have roped in.

He was excellent - we did walk and halts, on halts did a few steps back then went forward with a little encouragement, a very short trot and on the way home, he went first with about 30' between him and Cairo.

Ears were forward, head nosing about at everything and he was very happy striding out being a big boy out by himself.

Nikki rode him very well - this is the first baby she has been on. Decided it was easier for me to be on hand to assist rather than ride him myself, plus his rider is very slim rather than a 10 stone dumpling.

Next stage is for him to go out alone with me on foot in case he needs encouragement/assistance and then to build up the time out - this first hack was only about 15 mins max along a familar bridleway.

I feel very proud of him - hopefully he will continue to be as good. Not huge news, but for me another step down the road of his education.

well done Chancer, I can't believe he was so good

Well done that sounds great. He really is coming on in leaps and bounds!!!
Have been riding Alee a couple of times a week for 5/10 mins in the school too. I can now manage to get on and walk her round stop at each marker and also get a few strides of trot. It makes you feel so good when you reach those targets doesn't it?
Hopefully Alee will be as good when I hack her out. We are lucky in that we have a mile of gallops that are nicley enclosed. Ideal for that first hack.
Would love to see some piccies.

To be honest for the first half of his outing, I don't think he noticed he had a rider - she is very light and just sat with the reins loose and let me lead him. She then took contact and started to ride him, still on the lead. He has been led out for over a year prior to this.

Once we had done a few halts, starts and a trot, she then took the lead rein - and they were off

He is now doing 2 ridden sessions of 10 - 15 mins with 5 - 10 mins being trotted round the school on a line first in case he wants to have a leap around each week plus one or two ground sessions.

He had a treat Sunday - put up a little jump and he had 5 mins on the line of going over his pole, which is now up to a huge height of 1'3
