I've had my boy a few years now. At first he was a nightmare and needed rebacking which I managed and after 6 months or so he settled into a lovely friendly horse. He went well in company, never strong and he had never bucked or reared etc. I have hacked and shown him and could take him anywhere, even used him as a nanny for babies and to teach novices!
However at the end of last winter he dropped weight and had to have his work cut down drastically, he was also put on longer grass for longer hours. He is still with the same horses, similar routine, same yard, same treatment.
The past few months he has been awful to ride. He has bolted afew times with me, in company he rears and plunges in he wants to canter and I won't let him. He is very very spooky and feels constantly on edge. He jumps at every little thing and bolts when something freaks him out. I'm getting sick and want the old horse back!
He has been in a market harborough for the past few days and is going well in it but still bounces and plunges the whole ride. He is in a snaffle but has also been in a pelham.
I've had his back and teeth checked and both were okay. Ie also had saddle fitter out who said saddle does fit but I feel he could do with a new one, hence I am saving for a thorowgood t6 to see if that works! His saddle never slips and I've never had a problem with it moving or rubbing but as he puts on weight i'm worried it could be tight.
He also is only putting weight on his stomach, not topline or bum or neck which is confusing?
Could more grass really do this to him?
Would a calmer work?!
How do I get him back to normal
Has anyone elses horses behaviour changed drastically before?
