change of name?

My new horse has a horrendous name. I can't bear it. Obviously I have no plans to change his registered name, as he is a welsh section D with a WPCS passport, but I don't like his stable name. I've heard its bad luck to change names, just wanted to see what people thought. Also any name ideas would be much appreciated. He's a character (the napper and gate refuser in my last post), but I love him to pieces, and cannot bear to shout 'Sion' down the field, or admit my horse has a human name. My partner didn't even realise I had bought a new horse, he thought it was someone new working on the yard! :D

LOL both mine have human names (stable)!! Harry - I thought I'd have to change it but couldn't bring myself to. It gets abbreviated to Haz or Hazzer anyways. Then... I bought an ex racer, Bleuvito. Ah yes, what's his stable name? Blue? Vito? No. It's Andy. . . I swore I would change it but I just have to tell myself it's only a name. I felt like I couldn't... Personally, because it's their identity. Probably a bit deep, but oh well.

Unless you meant 'Simon' in which case I kind of understand ... but I have no problem with changing a name. I've had enough awful crap happen in my life not attributable to superstition that I don't tend to pay it much attention anymore.

I hate the name Sion, its the Welsh version of Sean, it just isn't right to name your horse that. It's like having a horse named Dave or Allan! hahah
 
Mine was called Jack and there were already 2 Jacks on the yard so he became Jackson. Suits him to a T ! If you don't like it change it x
 
I have a Welsh Section C who had a name I didn't like, I know it is supposed to be bad luck to change the name but I really couldn't bear the name he had (there was once a Blue Peter dog called this!) I tried to find a Welsh word or name and came up with Merrick, Merry for short. If I had persisted in using the original name I really don't think I would love him as much as I do, it sort of made him more mine.
I have another pony whose name I am not that keen on but it seems to suit him so have stuck with it.
So go ahead and choose a new name
 
I'd never heard of it being bad luck. My mother hates the fact Andy is named that, as she owns a mini that's with Harry and his name is Landy. So Landy and Andy can get uber confusing - so she calls Andy Blue / Baloo much to my annoyance, but he seems to understand she means him. I call Andy Anders though so it doesn't sound so pansy. It doesn't suit him I don't think, Blue probably does more or Anders. I've known robust natives wince at tiny cuts and bolt if they get scratched by a bramble, Andy has taken out a hunk of flesh from his rear fetlock and just carried on riding - I didn't even realise he's hurt himself until I got off and saw his white sock covered with blood. He's a TB too - some seem to think they're absolute babies but this isn't true of mine.

But I've had him a while now and it's only a name, it's cute. Ish. Lol.

Change it if you want, it's a load of rubbish about bad luck. I've smashed more mirrors to the point where the 7 years must be exceeding my lifetime, I'm clumsy like that. I guess there is no hope for me lol. ;)
 
I like sion although maybe would change in to Zion and emphasis the Z?

But I also quite like horses with human names, I have an Alfie and have just named my foal Zeke. How old is the horse? I had a horse with a stable name of perky for a while as she had gone to be broken with no real name with another so they were pinky and perky - I hated that so changed it to Flo, told myself it wasn't bad luck as she'd only been called it for about 6 weeks anyway....
 
I think human names are really funny. Me and dad have always enjoyed the thought of calling a horse Carl. Carl the horse. Perfect. I'm so into human names for all animals actually. My dog is called Gilbert :)))))

I know lol. When she told me his name was Andy at the viewing I was just like "your kidding right? Who's great idea was that?!" I figured that they must have so many Blue's, Percy's and Neds at the racetracks they need something different.. Or just got bored and called him that for a laugh :,)
 
I don't see the issue with name changing. If I don't like a name I've changed it.
My current loan horse is Jess which I hate but I should be buying her very soon and may contemplate a change of name !!

I just feel bad because the old owner is friends with my boss, and she comes to the yard sometimes, it would be hard to explain the name change without insulting her, as she bred him and named him :/
 
I hate human names for horses - it seems particularly prevalent with TBs - I've known a Colin, an Eric and a Simon - all thoroughbreds. Also known several Williams, a Bobby, an Edward, a Luke, a Toby, a Rupert, a Rufus, a Millie, a Ruth (that was a Welsh cob) - sounds like I've either got a very large family or run a small prep school.

I've often changed horses' names, or christened them when they have arrived without one. Changed one from Turnip (why would you call a horse that??)

None of the current gang have human names, and it's much nicer!

COLIN?! wow. I'm definitely calling him Turnip though :p
I really don't like it, But I don't know what suits him either. It's a tough one
 
I like the name Sion, but then I love human names for horses. I had an Alice for my first, and it suited her down to a tee.
 
I've changed lots of names without issue. The most notable was stable name "Princess Sheera Celeste" (I kid you not) which I changed to Shantih and she was a right terrorist, the next person called her Midget Gem and never had a moment's trouble with her so pick carefully lol.
 
I'm another who hates human names on animals.
My dog is called Tamriel and my cat is called Chilli. ...my horse is called Ned. urg!
I knew him for a good few years before he became mine though, so he was just Ned!

If I get another at any point, I will be changing its name if I don't like it. I once knew a stunning grey TB called Dave. I mean, really!!!!

You'd be surprised how many people struggle with unusual names though, I don't believe Tamriel is REALLY that difficult! Most people I meet simply can't pronounce it and just call her Tam, which is fine, I guess. It's Tam-ree-el, not hard!
Also, the name Loki seems to be very popular, so much so I've grown to hate it! 7 people in the Tamaskan community have used that name.

How about Soren? It's a character from Legend of the Guardians :)
 
Haha! Second what spacefaer said. My friend has a TB (ex race) and his name is Toby too. Andy and Toby get along really well.

Haha, I class them all as family anyway so meh. I don't think it bothers me too much. Turnip. That is a class name :,) love it.

How about Zorin? Sinatra? I don't know, have a look on some name websites. :)

I've renamed my new horse. Not told his previous owner (breeder) as didn't want to upset her, but will one day - D suggested the new name as a play on his colour and breed and it just stuck, so I'll tell her a version of that :)
 
We changed my boyfriends horse's name. His passport name is panache and his old stable name was nash which we just hated. We changed his name to Mr P which we find suits him much better :)
 
Also known an Alex, a Dave, a Jimmy, 2 Lilies, several Bobs, a Robin, a Ludwig and a Richard ......

We called our (very busy) cocker puppy Bustle. The vets spell it Bussell (as in Darcy, I suppose) and the Kennel Club pronounced it Bust-le..... names are difficult!
 
What about Sioni (rhymes with Jonny), a more colloquial version of Sion? Like a Charlie rather than Charles?

Do you want to keep the Welsh? I quite like Siencyn (pronounced Shen-kin) and it's close enough that he might answer to it. There's an old Welsh nursery rhyme about Sion and Sian and Siencyn going to Aberdare, where Sion buys a cockerel and Sian a hen. Not sure what Siencyn did!
 
I try not change them as such but adjust them!
My first mare was call Bitsy but was mostly just called Bits. She came in a job lot from Ireland so there was Itsy, Bisty and Teeny, I was quite glad there wasn't a forth one!
My gelding was had a stable name of Quetee (sounded like Cutie) so was shortened to just Q.
Current mare was called Julie (spelt Jooly), I couldn't bring myself to call that across the field and in my head I was constantly going 'me Julie' so she is now called Jools.
 
My horses tend not to have stable names when they come to me as I get them off a guy who imports them at 2.5yrs old, they are untouched until then. However when I got my first one (Now 5) the guy was calling her marge, as the woman he got her off was called that. I absolutely hated it! She is Gracie now. I have Gracie, Rio & Nemo.
