I bought a horse who is registered in the Netherlands and havent got a clue how to change his passport! He is with the KWPN society and their website is useless, and I was hoping someone would be able to help me shed some light on what I have to do? Thanks in advance :)

I had the same problem with a French passport. In the end I got my Dad who speaks fluent french to write a letter to them asking what to do.... they didn't bother to reply!
My next suggestion would be to get in touch with the UK KWPN society (if one exists) and ask them what to do. Or ask the BHS. Good luck.

It is my understanding that it is illegal for a horse to have more than one passport, regardless of the country of issue, so there should be no need whatsoever for you to change your horse's passport. I have one on a Dutch passport and never had any problems with vet completing vaccinations etc. I am sure that if this is the wrong advice, someone will correct me.

All you need to do is change the ownership with KWPN. These are the details KWPN emailed me when i needed to do it after buying my mare in 2008 (if you email them or call them you can speak to someone in English).

The fee most likely has gone up since i did it.

To transfer the ownership you can send the original registration paper (pedigree) and the passport to:

KWPN

PO BOX 156

3840 AD HARDERWIJK

The Netherlands

To register the horse in your name € 42,40

As from February 2005 all horses in the UK will need to have a passport.

The KWPN (Royal Dutch Studbook) can issue a passport in your name provided the horse is registered in the KWPN studbook.

What next?

A. HORSE ALREADY HAS A KWPN PASSPORT (PAARDENPASPOORT)

Ensure that the diagram on page 5, the written description details of horse and microchip (if applicable) on page 4 are correctly filled in stamped and signed. This must be done by your veterinary surgeon.

To help us identify the horse you must enclose a clear colour photograph of:
Full side-on view of the horse both sides 1x.
The full front of the head 1x.
The legs. Fore legs (from front) 1x, Hind legs (from rear) 1x.

To make it possible to verify the descent of the horse by DNA test, you need to take a hair sample of the horse. You can send the hair sample in n a little hair bag.

Fill in the enclosed form with your personal, payment details.

Send the original passport + A4 original registration papers (This is the paper containing the pedigree details), photos, hair sample and enclosed form with your details and payment to the KWPN.

KWPN will make the passport legitimate by stamping and signing it. We will also add the part of Human Consumption if this not already in the passport.
