Changing a horse's name?

I have a new pony, and I'm not a great fan of his name. I wouldn't normally change it, but it appears he has already had it changed once (he's only 3) and I prefer the original to be honest, the names sound fairly similar and he doesn't really come to his name, I can shout anything he just looks up at the noise and comes if it's me.

I know it's always been considered unlucky, but this would just be changing it back to his proper name? He is passported under the original name.
 
I think you'll be fine by changing his name back to the original, might even be extra lucky as you are undoing the bad luck that happened when it was changed before !!
 
I don't believe that nonsense about it being bad luck :rolleyes: If you want to change his name just do it, it happens all the time and the horse will learn his new name in no time. Horses answer to all kinds of nicknames from their owners anyway that bear absolutely no resemblance to their actual name. I've changed names, had horses whose name I didn't know to start with, or didn't have a name at all, and all of them have been named or renamed easily, doesn't take long for them to realise that that is their name in my experience.
 
I always change my horses' stable names, I never like the ones they arrive with. They learn their new names PDQ when accompanied by something to eat.
 
Old wives tales. I have changed a horses name for several of mine and had no worse (or better) luck than with any other. Go ahead and change it.
 
Purely for the record ,changing a horses name is not unlucky. The old adage was ,"Change of name ,Change of luck". It basically meant that a horse that had a bad name for some vice would often react totally differently to new owners,and a change of name was a fresh start. Jeeeez how people get these things arse about face .Incidentally,"Jack the ripper "is now known as "Minty" and possibly the most saintly pony you have ever met.

I think everybody knows it's only an old wives tale but like anything that might bring bad luck some are wary of taking the chance ! How many of us don't walk under ladders or worry if a black cat crosses our path etc. The rational side of us know's it's nonsense but there is a little voice saying "why take the chance" !
 
I am superstitious and have never changed a horses name, even if I don't like it. my new mare is called Claudia, but I call her claudie, claudes, gorgeous girl. very rarely use her proper name. though, having not had much luck since I bought her, I'm beginning to think I should have changed it!! :D

I'm the opposite, I will purposely walk under a ladder just to prove what utter tosh it is! I would absolutely have no hesitation in changing a horse's name if I didn't like it, none at all. I didn't change my mare's name because I happened to like it.
 
When he was younger, my horse was unrideably lame, and so was never given a 'proper' name, just a somewhat uncharitable nickname!
Once he was fixed, he was renamed something much more fitting, and he's never looked back since.

The other two we haven't changed, purely because there's nothing wrong with the names they came with :)
 
I changed both of my horses names! From luke to freddie and from aaron to arnie ( i hate human names on horses!!) sadly both have been injured but i dont blame the name change!! No way was i going to shout aaron across a field besides he prefers bear and replies to pretty much anything!!
 
Years ago I bought a chestnut mare called Poppy, didn't like Poppy for a horse so changed it to Amber. Depends how superstitious you are but an old wives tale really I think

That's confused me :lol: You don't like human names on horses but you've changed both their names to human names? Why? :lol:
