Changing a horses name

Only if it comes to call

Personally I wouldn't either - as bad as its name may be ! I'm not an overly superstitious person but have heard its meant to be really bad luck if you do ........... and since having a friend who changed her new horses stable name when she brought it, he was only 6 and she only had him a few months before loosing him to twisted gut and impacted bowel ! Ever since then have begun to believe the bad luck thing !!! It was sooo sad

list goes on and on

I really dont think that there is any problem with it. We have never had any problem with it, we used to have a pony that was called Tinkerbell (no way that i could live with that!) and we changed it and she ws a superstar! We also changed two other ponies names and in the end it seemed that the ones whos names we changed turned out to be the best!

We changed my girls stable name from Rusty to Ruby.... She used to answer to Rusty, but we kept shortening it to Ru anyway, so she had to get used to the Shortened version anyway.

Well, i don't often buy kids, but if i did buy one with a name i didn't like i'd change it...same goes for a horse!

Just like dogs, i'm sure horses would adapt very quickly to a change in name

I did'nt choose my girls name, I chose my sons, or her stable name, so the stable name changed from Summer to Donkey (or Princess) when she is being demanding!!!!

Nothing wrong in it at all as long as the horse isn't too old and used to its name, I bought a horse just rising 4 and his pet name was Matt which I didn't like at all. As his registered name ended in Spike I decided to change it to that. Everyone loves his name and he learnt it within a day.

As for bad luck.... that's all in the mind. Like I've smashed a mirror (7 years bad luck) but that never materialised.

My two first ponies were called Rodney and Charlie before I bought them, changed their names and had no bad luck with them, and now have sold them on.
I think its personal choice, I prefer slightly unusual names, but definately wouldn't want to have shouted Rodney across the fields

If the horse is used to its name then fair enough, it would be unfair to change it. I don't call my horses by their names when catching anyway, just whistle instead, they know its me and all come over. Plus my brain gets so confused I'd end up calling the wrong name otherwise.

I know someone that bought a horse called taxi but changed it because they didn't want to shout taxi across the field

I refused to change my ponies name when I was small (30 yrs ago, even though it was gross - felicity!!!!!) and had no probs. Got a bit older and "wiser" and changed a much loved horses name last year and had nothing but bad luck. Don't think I would do it again (and theres me thinking I'm not superstitious).

I wanted to change my lads name but just could not do it as he suits it sooo much.. when I call him in the feld though he does not answer to it, but he answers to PUMPKIN !!!!! it's like our secret name, just funny as he is large, round and orange !!!!

Personally would not change though

My horse is called Astor and he's a grey, like the name but shortened it to Ash and he's been but we have had some probs, so superstition might have sommit to do with it, all probs were minor ones though.

i was going to change my new horses name but the owner of one that i share has another and she said she changed her horses name and i know for a fact has had one injury after another since then so, im sticking with the name mine has thanks!

I bought the horse I rode and looked after at the riding school, I was there the day he arrived and when I went home he was going to be called Harry, when I arrived the next day they had decided to call him Lad and the mare that arrived with him Lady. I hated the name, to me it was a dog's name, so when I bought him I changed his name to Ben, never had any bad luck.

Divided opinions then - I think I will err on the side of caution and keep his name as I quite like it anyway. No doubt it will become shortened.
