Our yard has had some silly rules over the years regarding what bedding we are allowed to use. We used to be on straw then we wern't allowed it and now we are again!.... yippee!!

The problem is that it has been so long since I used straw that I can't remember how much i need to start the bed off. I remember that I used to get about 2 or 3 bales a week to top up but can't remember the starting amount. Would someone be able to remind me.

The other thing is that I am going to be changing from a hemp bedding. I had initially thought to run this down so that it was a clean change, but I am wondering if this is a good idea. What do you think?

3 Small Bales or 6/7 sections from a large bale

I did mine yesterday whoooopee

Brilliant, that is what I suspected.

I think I will just run the hemp down and then do a clean swop rather than mix the two.

I bagged up my old clean bedding and have been using it as a base layer for the wet patches then building a straw bed over the top of it. That way I can fork the straw up and sweep the wet away. Keeps the floors smelling nice.

I used a bale and a half of straw to make a bed (nice big banks) in a 12x12 stable, bed about 2/3rd of the floor space. I am on rubber mats too though.

I skip out Mon-Friday then take the wet out at the weekends. I use about 3 slices a week to keep the bed fresh and put half a bale in at weekends.

Lovely....and OH SO CHEAP !!

now that is a thought, especially as i seem to have loads of Flax Bed.

I moved all my mares flax bedding into the geldings stable, as I knew what he was like as I didn't want to waste the bed that had built up. 3 days on straw and she seems to be cleaner (oddly enough) and takes a fraction of the time to muck out too. I now can't wait for the flax to go so that I can change him over too

Star is now on straw as well. (Changed from shavings) 3 days on, I've found she is cleaner as well, and her very slightly thrushy front foot is clean! no smell.

Love straw
