Changing Bedding

I am tempted to change to straw but my horse does suffer from an allergy. Whether it is to dust I am not sure. It is more likely to pollen as seems worse in the summer. Shaving can be very dusty and the straw we have this year very nice. Grrrr what to do!!!!

I bed my boys on straw. Much less dusty than shavings IME. Much less expensive as well.

I use straw for one and shavings for the other. The one that has straw is very clean in the stable so can be skipped out but the other is a horrible dirty beast in the stable so has rubber matting with a tiny covering of shavings that has to be completely mucked out every day. I personally prefer straw as I think it makes a nice comfy bed and I like mucking it out.

IME, dust issues aside, straw doesn't absorb the wet as well as shavings so you end up with really bad smelling puddles which probably aren't great for allergie-prone horses (or anyone else!) with all the ammonia.

You could do a layer of shavings for absorption covered over with straw for insulation/something to keep them off the damp patches. Not done it for a horse but it works well for small fluffies and I know some people who like it scaled up!

Have a chalk floor so wet not an issue
