I just wondered if anyone could help, I am having real problems with canter on my 8yo TB. Every time we do a downwards transition in canter he changes behind. We have improved as he used to just go disunited after a tiny bit of canter whereas now it is mainly in the transition. He is worse on the left rein but will do it on both reins. I also sometimes have trouble picking up the correct lead on the right or it is so bad i think we are wrong when it is correct!

My instructor has advised lots of outside leg and to think about pushing his quarters in which has helped the canter itself but i still can't control the transition. We think it is just a habit (and possibly a bit of weakness/stiffness?? although the trot is now much more balanced and supple). I have seen him do it on the lunge so it is not just ridden.

I am desperate to actually be able to canter like most people :( please help!

This is often shown when the horse is slightly tense or anxious, try to take some pressure off through the transition rather than putting more on him, use a half halt then ask with as little leg as possible, dont worry if he drops a bit in the trot to start with, once he is established without changing you can then improve the quality of the trot you get.

Rather than always pushing his quarters try moving the front end out , some counter flexion work may also help, they will often push back against the leg if it is hard for them, making it easier can help the confidence.

I would also suggest getting a physio to look, there may just be an area that needs treating, generally getting him more strong and supple will all help.
