Wondered if anyone would know what this coat change is called?
He is a skewbald but is starting to get more white through his coat in patches and appears to have a dark patch of hair completely different to the regular bay and hasnt bleached in the sun! It is very strange especially on the rump!

Anyone any ideas? Its not dirt as it is the same after washing :)

Rabicano is a very specific pattern of roaning. I have read that it is though to be a form of Sabino (really complicated polygene).

This photo shows Rabicano clearly (on a black base colour in this instance) with the 'skunk' tail and roaning on the flanks.

ETA - A clear shot of a Rabicano 'skunk' tail.

Interesting! I have a 16+ standie, very dark bay with this on one stifle/belly. Thanks OP for asking, I always thought it was a sign of his age ( wasn't passported when we first had him and vet estimated he was about 16

My gelding is a chestnut sabino with a roany patch on his elbow. It disappears when his winter coat comes through, then it's back again when he's in his summer coat.

Pressed send to quick :)

The reason why I am interested is that photos on tinternet show horses that have large patches of white, not flecks that come and go!!

Not that it matters to me, but has sparked an interested ;)

As mine have gotten older they've all developed grey/white patches (especially the 29 year old HA) and I always just thought this was a symptom of old age no? Not sure about the bay appearing though, I've never really thought much about slight colour changes, probably because it's too complicated with all the sciencey stuff :P
