can anyone give me some feedback on feed please! As some of you may already know i have a lovely pony who 90 % of the time is brill but she can be spooky and hates livestock! i am wondering if she gets silly on sugar At the moment she has i scoop of hi fi lite and 1 coffe mug of baileys low cal balancer twice a day with apples and carrots in both feed also 1 scoop of ex stress calmer in each feed. We have 16 mile pleasure ride on monday so i am tonight cutting out all carrots as although shes not a chestnut she is a dun, she has a distinct orange shade! (know that chestnuts and carrots dont mix) i am also cutting out hi fi lite as read on forum that some of you think that it can cause fizzyness - so she will have extra section of hay to compensate. She will now have 2 mugs of baileys low cal extra hay joint sup and calmer - Wjhat do you all think??? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

it is highly, highly unlikely for hi-fi lite to cause fizziness, you can try cutting out carrots as if fed in excess some horses do react to them, the same with apples, you cannot change a horse's natrual behaviour by feed although you can influence it, some will always be sharp and spooky, one of mine is it's just the way things go.

the thing is she wasnt like that when i first got her(end of July) - i know she was very over weight but she suddenly went spooky about month ago - yes, it could be because its spring or seasons etc or just because her back was done and she was feeling good but it was and is so out of caracter - i know all that but i just thought id give it a go without sugar - dont even know it low cal balancer has sugar in it - so it could all be a waste of time!

hi cefnmelynkate - not really changing anything drastic -just giving another coffe mug of low cal and extra sec of hay - and not giving her the hi fi or carrots - do you think thats ok?

hi hairycob - thanks for that - i hope its the case for juno - thats the trouble with getting new horse, it takes a year or so to know them and their ways x

mine goes spooky when the spring grass comes through and when her seasons start, by about mid-may she has started to settle down again.

I doubt very much the HiFi Lite will be causing fizziness as it's incredibly low in sugars(around 4%) and contains molasses extract as opposed to straight molasses.
You could just be finding that your girl is feeling well due to spring being in the air, I know my pony is feeling incredibly happy with life right now.

There's probably a higher sugar content in your hay than there is in your HiFi Lite!

Give the manufacturers a ring and ask them re:sugar content of balancer.

thanks for replying sleepingdragon - i tried to ring this morning but no answer - have looked at bag and it has mollases in it so its all a bit of a waste of time this weekend - i think i will maybe put her on ride and relax which has no mollases alalfa or barley - head groom at my yard says dont feed her anything welshies can run on nothing but if i do long distance surely she needs something for energy - Its all so confusing - may put another post up for advise on that one x

You're welcome

Even in summer my welshie will be getting something, even if it's just her balancer and a handful of fibre nuts. HiFi Lite is an excellent fibre feed and I've fed it to mine(mixed with a little speedibeet) as a hay replacer as my little mare has dental problem.

Why not have some of your hay analysed?I think it's Dodson & Horrell that do it for about a fiver. They're really helpful so after the easter weekend give them a ring and see what they suggest.

Good luck with your mare
