Tried to get haylege in for the winter but some prices were £35 a bale or the ones at £20 were rotten looking.

I had my lot on hay before they moved to present yard, there was never any wastage like there is now, so im thinking about putting them back on it again. The man is offering me 300 bales for £370, i got hay off him before and ive seen this years bales aswell. He gave me 2 free bales to try them with and it all went!!!!

Sorry getting to the point now, i was just wondering if yous could recommend how much hay to give each of them daily as its been a long time since i worked with it.

Mo 17hh tb (8 yo)
Mae 14.1hh gypsy cob (4 yo)
Finn 14.2hh gypsy cob (2 yo)
Gypsy 13.2hh gypsy cob (4 yo)
2 foalies that are 6/7 months old
Mia 13hh light weight cob (6 yo)

I would feed ad lib. You know how much to give them when there is only a little leftin the morning. If it is all gone, they need a bit more!

If you are worried about the change upsetting their guts, blend the hay in with the haylage and then slowly wean them off the haylage.

Ive still a few big bales of haylage left, so was going to mix it and wean them slowly onto the hay. Its just what i have left is a bit bad as somehow its going rotten. So will have to try and pick out good bits.

Mae prefers hay, she just nibbles at haylage, but with hay she eats it all. I thought of changing to hay for a while, this just gave me the kick i needed

Like Yl said I would mix the hay in with whatever haylage you have left, With hay I just leave plenty of hay in with missy , she gets about 2 sections of hay in the morning , lunchtime and evening . Tommy whos 12hh gets 1 section morning, lunchtime and evening .

Personally for me , hay is in with them all the time .

I take it you got a new yard then ? where did you get ?

Possible yard coming up a few miles away, got nice DRY stables lol, nice arena and next to a bridlepath that takes you up in the mountains. Rode up there before and the view always leaves me breathless

I would say how much will depend on how long they spend in/out and how much grass there is left in their field. Daisy only eats two sections soaked hay each night at the moment but in the summer when she was on a starvation paddock she would happily much her way through 3 during the day and four at night. I'd go with advice above, start with ad lib and let them tell you how much they want
