Hi all, I was wondering if any of you guys can give me some tips on introducing my horse to a trailer. He has always travelled in a lorry quite happily, but since I have had him I haven’t been able to afford transport and have hacked everywhere I’ve wanted to go locally, I’m now in a position to buy myself a nice trailer, as I’d like to do some pleasure rides, The last time Barney was in a lorry was three years ago and he was absolutely fine, he is very sensible not at all stressed and very easy to do on the ground and in ridden work. He’s 16.2 so I have been looking at a Ivor Williams 511. I don’t want to ask any one to use it to try him out, I’m prepared to just buy one then if he really doesn’t settle in a trailer I will always be able to sell it on. I just need some guidance for helping him in the transition for travelling differently, I’m happy to take my time practising so if anyone has done this previously and can give me some helpful tips I would very much appreciate it. I also have a friend to share travelling with and her mare travels well so he will have some company for his first few jaunts out.

My youngster had only ever travelled in a lorry so when I changed it for a trailer I travelled him without the partition for a while so he had the space he’d been used to in the lorry (his balance was much better when stood diagonally). Then I put the partition in and he was fine and now he travels perfectly with another horse. Plenty of loading practice walking on and off and then a few short trips out to make sure he’s happy and confident and off you go. Like all training, just make sure he’s understanding and accepting each stage before moving on to the next.
