Changing Gag Ropes

Hi, my mare is ridden in a gag but one of the ropes is fraying away and im needing to change it before it snaps! I just cant work out how to put the new ropes through the gag??

Is it not studded at the bottom which just undo? If not, sounds like it's a job for your saddler if there's no way to undo the old which is what we did in the old days too.
