After a technical hitch with a lack of transport I'm collecting my girl in the morning :)
She's lovely, but I'm not keen on her name. She's currently called Mary, but I have an aunt, cousin and neighbour called Mary :D It doesn't suit her at all, she is too young to be a Mary.
Would you change a name? I've always been told it's terrible luck to change a name, so I'm potentially stuck with a Mary.
Any suggestions? :)

I've changed the name of every horse I've ever owned bar 2. I didnt change the current ones as it really suits him, and there was a previous pony with an unusual and pretty name that really suited her. All the rest have been changed

i changed a good few horses names and (touch wood) nothing bad ever happened. I got one in called Chelsea before, and i just couldnt face screaming CHELSEAAA across a field

I seem to change everyone's name without intention, over a course of a few weeks something sticks/suits or just happens.
With some of the names I have on passports there is not a chance I would be calling that out at feed times, Yoo Hoo *Incredible* come here for your grub......... nope it isn't going to happen!

I did have a Megan years ago and it suited her so that stuck but even that became Meggy

I seem to be going through an unintentional Royal faze at present :)

A name for your Mary will just evolve and suit her, have fun tomorrow, how exciting for you, Congratulations

I change the name of any of my horses if I don’t like them, they don’t care! My most recent purchase was called Peatapat?😳 I am NOT calling her that!

Going against the grain, and totally get that my experience was purely coincidental and I'm silly to put meaning on it, but Pops was the only horse I've had whose name had been changed. She was originally Pearl and the name change occurred before I bought her, but having lost her less than a year later I wouldn't tempt fate by changing the name of any future horses I have.

I've changed several names. I would never stick with a name I didn't like., I had a rescue with a rubbish name and he became Xavier meaning 'new beginnings.' His old name did not bring him any luck and he now has a lovely forever home! Amber was not named when I got her. She was still just Foal Number 5348267 or something. So I had the pleasure of naming her officially which was lovely.

I've never changed the names of any of mine - it just feels wrong to me somehow. I liked Tudor and Sixpence anyway, so that was fine, but it's also meant that I ended up with Alice and Mary. TBH, though, both of their names have suited them down to a tee!

I'm a bit superstitious and try not to completely change a name.
I will shorten/tweak. If I bought a Mary it would probably morph to May

Merry? Close enough to Mary but different!

you could change it to Marie (as in Marie Antoinette). I think its worse luck to have the poor thing stuck with a name that doesn't suit her and you don't like ! Pick what suits her :)

I'm another who will go against the grain and say don't do it. I changed both my horses names and have had some really, really bad luck with both of them, I wouldn't do it again.

Superstitious nonsense! Change the name, i always change the names of mine, its like a fresh start, plus they don't care as long as food is around :D we need pictures!! And congrats!

To be brutually honest I would've changed Diva's name when I got her (the amount of ***** I get from non horsey people for it! Despite the fact that it seems to be a really common name for mares!) but she responds to it.
Her passport name was "Jean II" and I couldn't have been persuaded to keep that for love nor money, even though I'm well aware someone probably spent an awful lot of time thinking before deciding on it (sorry, random person ;) ), but I hated that name. So changed it to Rainbow Diva because there was 1000s of rainbows when we were bringing her home xD

Honestly I am not superstitious about it at all but if they respond to it then I'd keep it, if not then why bother? :D Plus choosing names is quite good fun, though I am not actually very good at it!

my boys' name has evolved over the years, his breeder called him "junior" even though he was the most enormous foal (they were actually expecting him to be dead but there was a heartbeat), since then it was shortened to "jj" which I always hated. I call him "Jay" which is ok. His posh name is "phame" and relates to the fact that his father was pouschka - he is now 20 and has finally grown up and is now getting amazing comments from judges - boy has it taken some time. he is a typical "pouschka" very talented, loyal (loves his mum and is very protective) temperamental and very opinionated. it has taken many years but he is now an absolute joy to have. he still has his moments (loading - but we get there - it sometimes takes us a few minutes - he is never says no just I need a bit more time) ,

I dont believe in that superstitious nonsense - changed my horse's name from perfectly acceptable but nondescript Meg to Iona. Within a year she had colic surgery and dreadful recovery - 5 times the vet was prepared to pts and each time she pulled through; total cost after insurance was exhausted was 2 x her price (but nowhere near her value to me). Coincidence? - of course!
But friends still say - you changed her name, and you've had your bad luck ....

I'm superstitious but have slightly changed names. Tried to keep them sounding the same ie Marie, Marina, Mari,Marty, Merry,Sherry, ceri, Kerry, or Cheri etc

I changed my horses name because it was so awful when i got her! Her stable name was Rogue, and she was such a pretty dainty little thing, very polite and easy and the complete opposite of a Rogue, so we change its to Ruby which just suits her down to the ground. She didn't have a name in her passport, she was just 'Unknown 2011' so we got to make that up too which was nice :)

My mums horse is called Maii (May) but its a long story; she came to a yard i worked on to be backed and the guy hadn't named her but thought the kids called her May, my yard owner started called her Betty May, which then evolved to Betty. We bought her and hated the name Betty so reversed back to May/ Maii, when we got the passport she was acctually called Megan :D We kept Maii going, but its often lengthened to Maisy. . .
