I'm thinking of changing insurance companies after 6 years of insuring with NFU, since it seems they plan to raise the premiums hugely soon (I've spent £1,200 a year insuring my horse and never once claimed so am not about to spend even more!).

My question is - I had to have mine vetted before I could insure him. If I change to another company do I have to do this yet again? Or is it like a car and your "no claims" moves over to the other one?? Thanks!

I am in the process of doing this myself. I have dropped each horses value to under 5K and have not been asked for a new vetting, but horse's vet history. Anything over 5K and I needed a new 5 stage vetting done. That seemed to be the same for a few companies. Also require vetting if 30 days lapses between cancelling one policy and starting the next.

It depends on the company. I've just moved from NFU to KBIS and no vetting was required. Another insurer (I believe it was Sheerwater) did want a 2 stage vetting.

It may also depend on the value you want your horse insured for. Considering that you are paying 1200 for one horse I assume your horse is insured for more than £5000.

My understanding is that most insurance companies would require a vetting certificate that was less than 2 months old if the horse was to be insured for more than 5000 so you would need a new vetting certificate. It's worth calling around though to find out.
