Has anyone ever changed their horse's name? Pet/stable names specifically.

I'm just interested because some say it's bad luck, but I do it allllllll the time!

If something ever arrives with a boring name or something that doesn't suit it, or we already have an animal with that name I'll just give it something else, a bit more fun usually ;)

Would anyone else do this? Or do you believe it's bad luck?

(granted, one that I renamed last year is currently residing 6 feet under the turf.....but I'm putting this down to general bad luck rather than me cursing it with a new name!)

Thoughts?

I regularly change names, I sell a few for people and even they get changed sometimes.

Young pony, stable name Buck he became Robbie went to a lovely home but they already had a Robbie so he became Buck again:eek:.
A mare called Mizzy would not sell, changed her to Faith, she lived out with a Hope, sold to the next viewers.
Bracken, reminded me of a dog I knew, became Buttons, now a very successful pony.
Have also had an Andrew, that got changed before he even arrived.

Many others, as long as they dont really know the name or it is similar sounding I dont see why not.

Have changed all mine bar one

Lady changed to Ayla
Princess changed to Ellie
Prince changed to Bailey
Nino changed to Beau
Another Princess changed to Meg
And have one to change from Cerys to whatever I can think of

Hmmm - grappling with this very thing at the moment for a horse I have on trial.

But I have kind of gotten used to Tinky (really !) so I might stick with that. Can't think of anything similar that would fit better, and am conscious of the myth about changing names. Full name is Tinky Time. Oh dear....

See, if I had a horse called Tinky I would worry that all the others would call it Stinky - I'd have to change haha! :D

Although I called one Pickle not so long ago, that could be bordering on cruelty too....:)

I do it most of the time! I bought a lovely filly who was originally called Maddie (i hated that name) so she ended up as Scarlett and another i have was called Indie so i changed it to Summer (although she has lots of other nicknames, a few of them aren't repeatable lol)
And i think my Maxi Cob was changed by previous owners from Jake to Classic!

You know, I don't think I'd even thought of that haha! My Irish friend suggested Tinker but as that generally means chav horse, I reckon not !! Pickle is definately in the same ball park patterdale, so you cannot comment ;)

I didn't know changing a horses name was bad luck! When we got our Shetland pony we changed his name to Bracken, he was called Pedro. We've had him 17 years now though with no problems!

But he LOOKED like a Pickle!

Lol the names I give are probably worse than the originals tbh as I can be quite silly and have a well developed sense of humour (!)

Had one a few years ago that we knew nothing about, no breeding, history etc and he was a very generic bay gelding.
So we called him Mr Smith, never shortened it. I would hope the next owners changed it though! :D

I wouldn't do it - but then ponies I have had all had quirky but quite cool names. I usually end up shortening them or lengthening them though! or giving them a nickname.

Years ago I changed my new horse's stable name slightly...then it nearly killed me bolting before eventually the dealer took it back.

Superstition or not I won't change a horse's name again!

I think they can recognise heir names and so would change it to something that sounds very similar to what their original name was:
Cammy became Comet
Pringle became Prinnie
Molecule became Molly

And then if you buy from a dealer, they're all named Tom and so you have to just call them what you want!!

The dealers I used to know used to make horses' names up when you arrived. We went in a red car, we bought a ruby. My mate went in a red car, she bought a ruby. Another friend went in a green car, she bought a jade. Just to mix it up a bit, another friend went wearing a Bronte coat and bought a Bronte. It makes me smile. :)

Unless I love my future horses name for some reason then I've decided
Mare - Havanna
Gelding - Phoenix

yes this is what I spend my time daydreaming about.. dreaming the day I own my own

Molecule became Molly

I'm intrigued as to who names a horse Molecule...a scientist perhaps? I also love the shetland called Pedro - putting that in the mindbank if i ever get a shetty!

Mine was Millar, I changed it to Firenze and after a few weeks of everyone calling him Frenzy instead of Fih-ren-zeh he got changed back to Millar. Prior to that he was an Alex, so its a bit of an improvement I suppose.

Comanche used to be called Chief, but Comanche was in his show-name so I used that instead. Its a bit long for using in times of need (hollering across a field) so I tend to shorten it to Munch/Manchy

I don't think its bad luck but I wouldn't change a horses name.
We have bad communication now between human and horse, sit can only be a good thing o when horse recognises a name.
To change it could confuse it, especially if it coincides with changing home, yard etc.

I don't have much of a problem changing horses' names, unless they know them. I changed my youngster's because I loathe the name Amelie and since it was more scribbled on her passport than truly given to her (she had no idea it meant her!), it didn't seem to matter. She's now Lily or, more usually, Bug and Brat. I also changed my ex-racer's name, because there was no good way to shorten it. She didn't know it anyway either.

The older ones, I've not changed because none of them bothered me and all of them knew their names, responded to calls, etc. I don't think it's bad luck. I've had a whacking run of awful luck with my life partner mare and I didn't change hers at all!

Glad it's not just me! Would be different with a dog or something but ive never met a horse who knew it's name!

We have ours in herds out in the fields and most will come to a name call at any time of day, even the un fed ones - individually. So they definitely know their names at ours!
