Changing the registered name of a horse

Hello, I would like some advice regarding what to do if the registered name of a horse is offensive. Can it be changed on the passport ? TIA

It depends on who finds it offensive and why. Some breed societies will allow you to change the name at huge, huge cost.

I didn't think the breed society would allow offensive names to be registered. Can I ask what it is?

It is a horse a friend is in the process of purchasing and the name could be considered a racial slur. Horse is not a pedigree.

If the breeding doesn’t matter to the new owner I would just start a new passport as if the original is lost and then the horse could be called anything she wanted. It will mean starting vaccinations again though but would be the easiest way for the horse to have a new name.

Passport issuing authorities in this country are a strange and diverse bunch, so it is hard to say how helpful or otherwise they might be. Your friend it best getting in contact with them directly and just very politely asking the question and see what they say.

Horse passport agency allow name changes, for a fee, when transferring ownership. The old name will still be there just in brackets.

I changed Rigsby's name in his passport when he came. The old name in in brackets. It cost £15, plus another £15 to change his sex, and another £15 to change ownership. His previous sex is in brackets with a 'was' to explain.

If your current passport provider won't help, or is hugely expensive, you can simply register with another. Rigs is of no particular breeding. I believe you would need to get a vet to do the silhouette and confirm chip number, but I could be wrong. Of course, that would add to the expense.

I would have thought the current passport provider would be sympathetic if the name was potentially racist. Worth a conversation.

The registered name has to be used for affiliated competition, where it will be even worse to hear it over a tannoy.

Regarding the name change being bad luck, I changed the name of almost every horse I owned, and I married on Friday October 13th, 45 years ago. We've got a big anniversary this year, they don't come round that often.

I changed my pony's name on his passport when I (finally got round to changing ownership). His passport had his (very very common) stable name so when we registered BD he would have been Common name 45th or whatever. So we just changed it slightly so that it still resonated with his stable name, but he wasn't one of many and therefore assigned a number. I can't remember the exact cost but it was fairly minor, £15/25 or so.

I've recently done a name change with a PetID passport.
Think it was 20 something pounds.
Old name still there in small print under new name.
