Hi,
Yes, A Vet has to phone your previous Veterinary Practice and ask for permission to treat your horse and request all previous notes. This is a rule set out by Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, if they fail to do this the new Vet can be struck off the register, in the same way that you cannot walk into a Vet Surgery that you do not belong to and just by a horse wormer etc!!
Yes, its not usually a 'cloak and dagger' thing its just age old respect from one Vet to another! the new Vet should decline to see your horse until he has recieved the go ahead from the previous practice.
I think this only applies if you are changing vets in the same area - if you've moved out of the area then they don't need to inform your old vet? A bit like us changing GPs - easy if you've moved to a new district, need permission if you just can't stand your old GP
Might still be a good idea though, if you want them to know the past history.
I don't bother - I have my horses registered with a couple of vets because I know one vet has fantastic diagnostic facilities but their call out charge is expensive and their charges for drugs is about 50% more than the other vet. So I use them only for serious diagnostic work. and I go straight to them - I do not go to my standard vet as I would then have to have an appointment with that vet before being referred to the diagnostic vets. However the other vets are very local - can do all standard procedures and are cheaper to call out.
My view is it is private health and I pay for it - therefore I can go where I want to get the best treatment for my horse. I am very open with both vets so they know I use them both.
It is far too much not wanting to upset the other vets feelings If I have a medical problem and need treatment privately I decide which clinic I want to go into - I find out which has the best reputation and I tell my GP that's where I want to go.
Even when you do tell them its not always very straightforward.
It took me 4 months to get my horses notes and x-rays sent over. This was despite weekly telephone calls from me and my new vet.
