Changing yard - Would this be too much for my horse to cope with mentally?

Hi all

Just after some advice. I appreciate that none of you know my horse, his personality or what he is capable to deal with mentally but your opinions would be great.

I am planning on sending him to be restarted as this year has not gone well with him losing his confidence and injury, hopefully in about 6 weeks time.

I'm a bit fed up of my livery yard. The yard owner is a grumpy sort, the kind who actually likes it when things go wrong for you! I've been there for some time, it's quiet and small with good ish facilities and being a BHSAI I generally keep myself to myself.

There are things about it I don't like and feel the time has come to move on and find something better. I am thinking that I could organise somewhere so that when he comes back from being restarted I would put him in his new home.

Do you think that would be too much for him to cope with? It would mean 2 different places in a short space of time, or would it be the perfect time for this?

Options great fully received :)

He'll be fine. The new yard will be a long term yard hopefully so he'll settle in eventually :) If you're not happy at current yard, then I'm guessing neither is he!

He will be fine.

I did this with one of mine. He had been at home 3 years. Went away to get backed and then went to a friends to be produced straight afterwards.
I was the only familiar thing and he coped perfectly well.

He'll be fine :) My mare went away at the start of 2011 for 3 weeks hydrotherapy and we moved her to a new yard when she left the hydrotherapy centre as the yard we were at had no school and we needed to work her. She coped really well and settled really quickly. Good luck with your horse :)

Surely the alternatives are to return to a yard you don't wish to remain at, and either remain their long term despite wishing to move, for fear of unsettling him, or to move again, for a third time, after he has re-settled into his old home. Since neither of those are particularly logical at all, surely to move to reschooling yard, then on to new home is the most sensible answer.

Mind you, I'm pretty lucky, mine seem to accept whatever I throw at them like this, so I never really see the problem with "unsettling moves" :D

Horses seem to settle better when there is something constant in their lives ie - you! When I bought my mare she had a very wild two weeks until she settled but then having moved again since she didn't bat an eyelid because I was there with her and at least that part wasn't new. We are moving again next week and I am certain that she will settle - although there is a stallion involed this time

I am sure he will be fine!

Great thanks everyone.

That is exactly what I thought. I'm so anxious that he gets going again 100% correctly I'm questioning everything!

I will let you know how we get on!
