I haven’t worn chaps for years, but I can’t get my big fat ankle into any of my long or country boots so I’m wearing short yard boots for yard work and riding but I do feel I want a bit of stability around my ankle that the short boots don’t offer. I’m also fed up of getting hay down my socks when I’m doing nets.

They need to be chaps that are stretchy enough at the bottom to go over Mountain horse classic boots or things of that size.

Any recommendations? Short boot recommendations also appreciated, as my mountain horse ones aren’t great from a waterproof point of view anymore. Ideally I need something lace up that I can open up wide to get my foot in without too much pain.

Funnily enough my classics were the only boots I could get on when I broke my ankle as well, I had some mountain horse suede chaps that worked but they were very old and far too big on the leg for me, I did wear my suede full chaps for a bit to ride in not the best but I can't have pinched calves, my friend wears thick riding socks instead of chaps and she reckons it doesn't pinch.

I wear Mountain Horse short boots with Ariat chaps. They originally went with my Ariat boots but after having been stood on I switched to steel toe caps so they are quite chunky. The chaps don’t look out of place and the strap fits well over the sole and zips up fine.

Ariat do very smart short boots that lace up but they are quite a slim fitting boot.

I bought my son some suede half chaps from robinsons that were ludicrously cheap (he grows too fast for anything expensive) and they are v stretchy. And warm.

The classics seem to be low enough to not annoy my hardware and are really comfortable. The hay down my socks is infuriating though😅

I had a bit of an issue with this and my ariat tellurides (did a thread as all my previous chaps were dead lol). I got some tuffas which have been fine with them (noting I need a fat calf short too ;) )

I wear these with lace up Ariat Tellurides and they go over the chunky boots really well. You can get them in different lengths and widths.

The Tellurides are very comfortable and definitely waterproof. They are slightly big in length. If I was buying again, I’d get a half size smaller I think.

You need the waterproof gaiters my farrier uses them to stop bits getting into his boots.

I lived in my classics for months wore them everywhere as noting else would go on my foot

Thank you all. I popped to Charlie’s yesterday and tried some different ones on. I managed to find a cheap synthetic pair that had quite a bit of stretch so I bought those, but I will have a look at some of the suggestions on this thread as I don’t think these will last very long and they aren’t the prettiest! Stops the hay going down my socks temporarily though.

I’m going to order another pair of mountain horse classics because they really are the only thing my ankle will tolerate. I picked up some cheap mucker style things for really muddy conditions, but I can’t wear them for long periods so will just pop them on if it gets wet out in the field.

Annoyingly I have lots of lovely long/country boots that are currently mocking me in my tack room 😅

I really like the Tuffa suede chaps and they fit over chunky boots
They dont over mine. I posted about having Mountain horse half chaps to go over my winter mountain horse boots.
I needed to buy them because my normal Tuffa suede half chaps wont fit over my MH boots.

I wear Ariat Telluride boots for everything and my chaps wore out. I ordered Adult medium in Shires chaps (as in the link above) and they came out too small to fit over the boots. Previously have always fitted. not riding now so doesn't really matter, but beware, sizing is now on the very small side!

What also helped my ankle is the neoprene ankle support or the bandage type ones, I wore those constantly in the beginning and rubbing tiger balm into the area in the evening soothed the throbbing.
