Disclaimer: I have stirrups that will release if my foot goes through them.

I'm starting to ride more often now despite my back but my long boots (somehow) make the sciatic pain in my lower leg and foot worse. I'm only comfortable when riding in two types of shoes - trainers and espadrilles. Esps are idiotic to ride in so I won't be doing that regularly! In trainers I'm finding that the stirrup leathers are pinching my calves a lot. Are there specific chaps that fit with trainers? What do the endurance people do?

I used to wear something like this - https://www.dublinclothing.co.uk/products/half-chaps-gaiters/dublin-easy-care-half-chaps - soft rubbery half chaps that fit over trainers and walking boots. They give fairly good ankle support too. They did give out after a while tho, so you might need to replace them quite often.

PS Please don't ride in espadrilles. And REALLY don't handle horses on the ground in espadrilles!

They look good - and cheap! :). Thanks!

I can promise I won't be handling or riding in esps again - it was a one time thing and very very stupid. I like having all my toes attached!

I bought some Dublin mesh chaps after a reco on here. Mine were in a sale mega cheap and I actually love them! Not the very smartest but so cool and comfortable and easy to zip on and off, unlike my smart ones!

Thanks all, I'll have a look at these tomorrow :). Socks over jods might be a good shout - don't know why I didn't think of it!

Like these!

This was just after I'd just sat on Dave for the first time. Stupid grin central.

Have you tried some short leather boots or something similar? Riding in trainers really makes me wobble.

How about Ariat terrains - best of both worlds - come in zip and lace. Not cheap, but think you can wear them everywhere riding, yard work etc.

And some comfy stretchy neoprene chaps.

Quite a few endurance people wear neoprene chaps, they are quite stretchy or mesh ones

I have a plain brown version of these from Just Chaps that I used for my Icelandic trek last year over walking boots very comfortable.

Have you thought about either getting supportive insoles for a short boot rather than trainers to give more cushioning? I wear gel insoles in my Tuffa boots. Also my sister swears by Ariat Devon Pros for stopping her back problems getting worse.

Thanks again everyone, you've given me some things to think about :). I've ordered a pair of the neoprene chaps so fingers crossed they fit!
Re: footwear - I definitely need a better option than trainers when I'm riding regularly again, the Ariat boot-trainers might be worth a try if I can find some in stock locally to try on. I've got a pair of Mountain Horse short boots which are OK if I'm only on for 5 or 10 minutes but I suffer if any longer than that. Ideally I'd like to find out exactly why my long boots make my sciatica worse as it doesn't make any sense for them to have that effect :/.

DM - I love Daves colour!

Parsnip (dog) ended up riding most of the way home with us after getting a thorn in her paw. She would like to always be that tall :p. Also I'm aware I look about 12, I'm actually 24 but look like a chubby potato when I have my skullcap on!
