CHAPS Youngstock Evaluations for 2009

Thinking of taking my new 11 mth old colt to the Youngstock Evaluations for 2009............ I have competed CHAPS inhand up to county level with my mare, but never done anything like the Youngstock Evaluations.

Hoping it will help with making my mind up to geld my colt or not!

Anyone done the CHAPS Youngstock Evaluations and can anyone enlighten me as to whats involved etc etc

I haven't done one myself, but have watched the mare and stallion gradings in the SW. The horses are presented square and then walk and trot on a triangle.

Have you looked on the CHAP site evaluations pages? The grading scores are there.

I've always found the admin staff really helpful if you email or ring them.
I think Volatis has done them, perhaps PM her?

Just wrote a VERY long post and hit 'Back' ... POST GONE! ahh!

Anyway, will try to do this is as little words as possible lol

Basically I groomed for an old friend who took her yearling to be inspected/graded, drove the whole way to Cavan, spent hours waiting about even tho we arrived on time. Almost had my face kicked in by about 7horses who were being very carelessly handled by extremely rude and impatient owners-some handling stallions in a headcollar and old blue rope and trying to pass each other in crowded areas-horses kicking/rearing people trying to get out of the way of flying hooves..

Finally got into the ring where two judges stood laughing and joking among each other, told the owners to walk away from them and trot back down to them. I dont know how in gods name they evaluated half the horses peoperly because they were so busy having a laugh that they wernt even paying attention to the horse!-Id also say its hard to evaluate straightness/paces when troting diagonally towards the judge who is facing forward...

Hope Im not offending anyone but we walked away thinking the whole thing was a joke! There was absolutely no order or organisation about the whole event, In total id say there were 2 stewards, who were having coffee in the viewing gallery!

Oh gosh, im sorry Im sure this isnt what you wanted to hear but I really had a very bad first impression!

Hope it works out well for you though and you have a better experience with the society than we did...x

Doesn't sound like any evaluation or assessment I have ever officiated at (CHAPS, Futurity or whatever) and I have been involved in many over the years. Graders and evaluators that I know always take their jobs very seriously and although they may pass a couple of light hearted comments to the handler to lessen the tension (and thus help the horse being assessed become less tense and show itself off better) this does not mean that they treat the process of assessment in any way but totally professionally and seriously.

If what you say happened took place in Ireland (and I have a feeling it must have) then it goes a long way to explaining why Nick Finnerty told me (just before he left The Irish Horse Board last Novemeber) that his reason for suggesting that the sport horse grading system in Ireland be suspended was 'becuase no-one takes it seriously sny more'.

I can assure you that that attutude does not apply anywhere else IN THE WORLD that I know of (and especially amongst UK studbooks and the Futurity).

Lmao...as a matter of fact it was held in Ireland, and I have to say that i completely agree with Nick Finnerty!
Unfortunatly Futurity does not be held over here, which is a shame for those of us who do actually take it seriously.

I do actually love to see judges smile and be friendly with the handlers as to be fair, there are not that many who make you feel relaxed, but, Trust me the judges on this occasion were not taking it seriously at all! And to be honest I have to say it was probably understandable on this occasion as 95% of the entrants were made up by 10-17yo jypsy girls wearing VERY short skirts and high heels leading ponies that had been pulled straight out of a field! It was more like a hooker parade than a horse grading!-Apologies if this has offended anyone but it is the truth.
