Hi everyone, having given up on the idea of selling my horse, I am now thinking of advertising for a sharer and wanted an idea of what I should/could charge.

He is kept on full livery so no stable duties, sharer would be able to ride 3 times a week including one weekend day, and compete if they are interested. One of the reasons I had decided to sell was that I have completely lost interest in competing, so am happy for someone else to take up the reins in that department!

He costs me c. £550 a month to keep, so for 3 days a week I was thinking of asking around £200 a month. However I really want someone who can help bring him on so if it was a good rider for £150 a month I would probably go for it.

I have looked on Horsemart and there are other shares advertised for around £200. I used to share a horse about 3 years ago and paid £125 a month and had to spend most of my weekends poo-picking/doing other chores in addition, so I figure it's worth the extra money to not have to do this (I would have happily paid the extra £75 at the time)!

Anyway, would welcome any thoughts!

Thanks

I think the going rate is generally around £10/day, but if you have good facilities and a competition horse you could probably ask for more.

Personally, I'm looking to share where I'm having lessons, and I'm expecting to pay more than that (still cheaper than paying for lessons/hacks 3 x a week!)

Hmmmm I personally wouldnt pay it. You want a competant rider to bring the horse on, who would like to compete your horse for you as you no longer wish to do so,you should be paying them!!!!
You choose to keep it on full livery, so it is down to you that the costs are so high (most sharers dont mind doing the chores to be honest!) I pay £50pcm for 2 days a week (but could have more if I wanted- could also compete) I help the owners out with all the chorse, and their other horse if they cant get down----- BUT i do know i am VERY lucky and this is seriously cheap!!

There may well be a rider able to bring on and compete a horse that is willing to pay £200 a month out there...... but if you get no takers after a month I would seriously reconsider the price!

What she said!!!

I think that if you are after an experienced rider, capable of bringing on a young horse, the costs should be lower.

Thanks guys for your thoughts. He's not a young horse (he's not old either, he's 8) and has successfully competed SJ/XC/dressage at riding club level, so he doesn't really need that much bringing on (sorry I don't think I worded my original post very well!), it was more that I'd like someone who'd be interested in schooling say once a week/maybe having lessons rather than just a happy hacker. Also, I'm not really fussed as to whether the person wants to compete or not, but I thought this might be a good selling point.

I think the problem with sharers is they are (usually) people who have never had their own before, or who have and are returning after a break (I am the latter!). So maybe competeing might not be top of the list of priorities- or maybe thats just me LOL :)

Have PM'd you. But your suggested price is about right for Surrey.

I have freinds paying about that and have charged about that for my horse all without complaint or problems. I know it is a lot higher than in more or less any other part of the UK so far as I can tell. But it is about right for here I'm afraid.

£50 a week is expensive in my opinion, and I wouldn't have paid it. It was only 6 years ago that I was paying £20 for 3/4 days a week including competiting. On those days I did all of the chores. I also paid for shoeing every second time round (so owner paid, I paid, owner paid, I paid), and had to pay for any non-essential items I wanted for competing - for example I wanted to try showing so I had to pay for a little brown numnah for under the saddle, but when her noseband broke the owner paid for that repair.

It's difficult as the sharer may be more willing to do chores than pay extra for the full livery which is your choice.

Shame your not nearer , I'd bite your hand off as I'm looking for the same kind of set up. Move to Scotland? Lol

Whereabouts in Surrey are you?

I know of people who are asking and getting those sort of amounts but it does tend to be at the smarter yards so they would expect reasonable facilities.

As for the competing, for some people that would be a bonus not a chore.

Thanks criso, we have good facilities - 2 sand schools (one floodlit), sand gallops, showjumping field will full set and a cross country course is being built, plus really good off road hacking. JenJ - it is near Guildford in Surrey.

Probably too far for me, but for good hacking, a school for winter evenings, and gallops and a cross country course - I'd pay.
