Charges may be applied to Domestic Waste

In Canada we have regular waste, blue box recycling (all paper, plastic, glass) and green bin (all food waste, tissues, cotton wool, dead flowers, etc) These are picked up each week, a seperate lorry for the recycling. My recycle piles far outweight my trash piles. If I need to put out more than I am allowed, I can buy tags from the council to put out extra bags (a dollar each I think) After certain holidays (like Christmas) they allow you a week of no limit, so you can get rid of all your rubbish. They also collect and mulch Christmas trees.
 
In addition, we return for reuse all our wine, beer and spirits bottles, we pay a 10c or 20c deposit on them, depending on size, and you get it back when you return them
 
I thought it was called Council Tax?!

I certainly won't be paying any more to the council to remove my rubbish.
 
A note on the Antwerp City council thing discussed on page one - they used degradable bags for the food waste - and they degraded on the streets, it was horrible!

For us, there is already a limit to what everyone can produce - the wheelie bin. I live in a shared house which has six adults in total. We have one wheelie bin, and if we produce more rubbish than that, it isn't taken away. The problem lies in the fact that a house with one occupant also gets one wheelie bin, when surely they should produce enough rubbish for 1/6 of that bin each week when compared with us. Ok, reduce the amount people can throw away, but don't charge them for it, council tax costs enough as it is...
 
The proposed new charges are not equivalent to council tax or paying for waste to be collected and removed.

The point of them is to deter people from creating excess landfill waste in the first place. To get people to actively participate in recycling. It is quite possible that people who produce minimal amounts of landfill waste will actually gain £ (gain credits) from this system. But if people continue to blatently use and throw away without modifying their habits they will be penalised for this. Whilst I agree pressure should be put on manufacturers also, personally I think this idea makes sense and will probably be the only way to get offenders to change their habits. So it's fair game in my view.
 
I do agree that houses with more residents should have more space allocated in terms of 'bin space' for taking things away. The space should be calculated per person....
