Hello

I am wondering what you think of Charisma's condition for this time of year. She has tended to lose weight over the Winter and I am trying my hardest not to let it happen again! She was rather lean over the Summer and our saddler and two instructors said she could do with some grass because although she wasn't thin she was just under "good" condition. So in September she had 6 weeks off, then I started to ride her about 4 times a week, just light work.

Now with the weather she hasn't been ridden for over a week, so take that into account when commenting on her topline! ;) Really she's only been ridden lightly for just over a month after 6 weeks off.

Currently she is fed ad lib hay, just under 2 scoops of Baileys # 4, 2 large scoops of Alpha A, 2 small scoops of Sugarbeet, glug of oil, bute and pink powder. Phew! I have decreased her Baileys slightly now she hasn't been ridden, but will increase it to 3 scoops when we're back in the swing of things. (As advised by a nutritionist).

She shares the field with Harry who is a 12.2 Welsh and they get two large haynets a day. I *think* that's enough, but when I get to the yard at 5.15 they're waiting bu the gate which makes me think they could do with another one? Hmm.

Anyway, here she is this morning eating her breakfast:

Sorry the photos aren't that great, but it was early and I didn't want to mess about taking her out of her stable etc!

Thanks xx

Cor photos are massive sorry! :D

Jen, she looks really good in her coat. Shiny and supple, just how you want them.

If she were mine I would want more on her (but that is my weekness, I do like them carrying a bit of condition).

How much hay is left in the field when you get her in at night?? And in the morning when you turn her out from her stable??

What weight rugs is she wearing, and why is she on bute?

Oops I meant biotin! :-O She's on biotin as per farrier's recommendation. (Slightly cracked hooves).

Currently she is wearing a middleweight turnout and stable rug, with an Amigo Insulator rug (100g fill?) underneath. When it turned really cold she did have two coolers on underneath, but she felt boiling! So bought a slightly thicker under rug to use instead.

Sometimes she has a couple of handfulls of haylage (both in field and stable) left but the past few days they have been empty with a few scraps on the floor. I thought this morning of getting her a small net and add that in the stable? I don't think she'd eat two large nets.

She is rather fussy about food which doesn't help matters!

Get as much hay in to her as you can. I like to see some left in the net in the mornings. Same with her field net. Just start increasing it until the 'right' amount is left.

As for rugs - get yourself a decent HW TO rug. That can be used in and out of the stable.

I think she looks fab! Super shiney, and not underweight at all. I agree with giving her a bit more hay so she has a bit left over - other than that I don't think you need to up her feed at all (though you know her best, and if she drops weight easily over winter it may be better to err on the side of a bit of extra condition now). Agree with amymay re the decent HW turnout; I love my PE trio :)

Thanks Amymay - I'll get another net in her stable tonight and add another one to the field on my lunchbreak. I'd rather do that then add more concentrate - her feed are big enough as it is!

I'll have a look for a HW rug with a neck. Suppose the MW can be used for Autumn/Spring
