As some of you may know, I am arranging my second cycle for charity, the first was a fairly big one, 72 miles in a day for EST.

Well, the second is even bigger.. It was going to be 100 miles in a day.. but I was talking to someone that wants to do it with me last night, and we have decided to cycle Leeds -> London in two days for WHW.

Now comes the 10 months or so of training and publicity in order to raise about £7000 for WHW (Ugh..)

I need your advice on whether you think I should approach local businesses for sponsorship in return for their logo on a tabard which will be worn on the ride? Or approach bigger nationwide companies in return for the same thing? Should I talk to local press or try and get more publicity by approaching the big papers and magazines?

S

(Bit of a random post)

P.S. It may be 3 days

Personally I'd do all of that, but make sure they're firms that the charity would appeal to their being associated with. So I'd try insurance companies, well known 'brands' and locally try local shops and specialist services.
As you're working so well in advance I'd approach the magazines and newspapers to see if they'd like a blog on their websites which could start immediately re preparing for the ride, as I'm sure it's the sort of thing that would attract regular visitors to their site if it was mentioned in their magazine, as well as getting you more sponsors.

FWIW my brother took up distance cycling in his late 30s and now regularly cycles on the FNRttC and only a couple of weeks ago did a little detour with his friends to my house for tea en route to London from Bath which they did in a day, so I'm sure with 10 months to practise you'll be fine on that distance a day. I know when I was younger I could do 60 miles in a day without prior practise (tried it!). Bicycles are so much better now though, my 25 year old Dawes Galaxy tourer which then was considered fairly top of the range is more than twice the weight of my brothers new titanium one.
