Is there anything we can do about it?

We we're out hacking and walking up this narrow lane, myself on dodge and Tinkerbee on my Janey. This dog shot out of this drive and started chasing us

Both horses set off full pelt, Janey in front (as you can see from my sig, she's not the smallest of horses to stop) We we're desperately trying to pull them up, but this dog was practically on my tail, Dodge was kicking out but it just kept chasing us, there was nothing we could have done, it was sooo scary the lane is narrow many blind corners, if a car had been coming the other way i just dread to think what would have happened. and let alone a pedestrian, hence why we were only walking at the time.

About 1 mile later we finally managed to pull up as the dog had backed off.

The house which the dog had shot out from is massive with a huge garden, i can't understand why the gate was left open, or no one with the dog. we don't even know if the dog was from there.

we can't avoid that route as it's the main route to the bridle ways otherwise we would have to go along a very busy major route for lorries traveling from chesterfield to Buxton

Both horses are fine and no damage was done and we laughed afterwards but it could have been a lot worse.

We often have a simlar prob down the beach, I stop and turn around sharp straight away and try and chase it back. It normally works and they back off, have not had to resort to the schooling whip yet but would.

Most dogs enjoy the chase more than anything and therefore if you stop I have often found they get bored and wander off.

It is quite amusing if you haven't noticed and take someones disobedient dog 2 miles down the beach and they have to go catch it if we manage to leave it at the other end

The klaw states that Dogs must be kept under control at all times in a public place.

You need to determine who the owner of the dog is and try to calmly explain to them their obligations and the dangers that their dog is causing tp passing horse riders.

However if they fail to co-operate then simply report it to the police (asking for an incident number) and also the local District Council Dog Warden. (Every District Council is now obliged to have a dog warden).

Even a dog kept in a garden but barking at the boundary fence can be deemed to be causing a nuisance and the owners obliged to erect a secondry inner fence. The piece of legislation that covers this is the Environment Act and has been used on a number of occasions where this occurs next to a bridleway or public highway.

We had a similar problem locally, where two dogs in an unfenced garden were chasing horses down the road. One of the riders involved rang the local dog warden, who visited the dog owners, gave them a talking to and (I think) threatened to impound the dogs if it happened again. Had no more problems after that.

same thing happened to me once! The owner eventually caught up with me, i had managed to pull my horse up and the dog was still snapping around us, and she said "Oh - Thank God it didnt kick my dog!" and buggered off!

I was left there panting like a German porn star trying to call out insults in between attempting to regain normal breathing!
