Cheap and rural

I was just perusing some properties in Scotland on Rightmove and was a whole new level of gobsmacked by what you could get for your money in rural locations in other areas of the country.

So can people recommend rural areas of the UK, ideally England or Wales?

Criteria
. Cheap property prices
. Awesome dog walking

We currently live in a leafy suburb about 15 minutes drive from the New Forest, so are very spoilt for walking. Alas, also plagued with expensive house prices.

We are thinking of selling up and moving somewhere cheaper but still rural enough in about five years time.

I work from home so work opportunities are not of huge importance so long as I can get decent wifi 😅

Hoping to take a few holidays in recommended locations to see where we like.

Ceredigion already on the list ✅️

Scotland… weather and midges.

My mum lived near Barnard Castle and Co Durham is cheap and lovely. It’s very cold and she lived high up so could get sleet, wind and fog simultaneously.
We moved to rural mid Devon. Not a touristy bit. It’s not hugely cheap like northern Scotland but compared to Essex it was! I imagine same compared to Hampshire.
 
The further away you are from towns/cities/"civilisation" the cheaper you'll find it.

For your budget, I'd suggest Wales or Scotland, northern or NE England. Certainly I'd be very surprised if you found anything in rural Shropshire within your budget. Although the dog walking opportunities are amazing!
 
I honestly couldn't say what the budget is going to look like in 5 years time.

I have quite a large number of company shares that I am waiting to vest which I have literally no idea how much they are going to be worth, partner has a sizeable chunk invested in some bollox that I would rather he didn't, so we will either have money from that or we wont 😅 plus who knows what will happen between now and then.

If things go well, I will keep Shropshire in mind.

If they don't, then I won't 🤣
 
The Forest of Bowland, cheaper rather than cheap, but amazing dog walking. Better connected than more isolated options, but also easy to find solitude as it’s largely overlooked by tourists. The Lakes, Yorkshire Dales and North Wales are all within easy reach too.

At least any of the towns give you very easy/quick access to the Mynd etc.

None of it is too far away.
I dont think there's a lot on the market atm ?

Because of our search area, Shropshire keeps cropping up. I’m assuming you’re on this group, plus the one I mentioned on Jenko’s other thread? https://www.facebook.com/groups/1134514050444140 No idea of your budget or target area (don’t know what the golden triangle is, sorry), Ludlow keeps flashing up for me, anything with land seems to be increasingly expensive. It’s the area in between the naice red-trousery market towns of South Shropshire - predominantly Ludlow to Church Stretton but EAs will claim it for the rural bits up to Bridgnorth, Bishops Castle, Shrewsbury, Ironbridge etc.

Not looking for land as aiming to be close enough to my mum’s place that I can use hers more often, but also need to be commutable to the M54.

The market is frustrating - there’s some stuff last sold during covid at hugely inflated prices now sat there for months at 30-40k overpriced. Everything else that goes on not needing full reno is sold in 48hrs and we’ve been outbid on offers at full asking price.

So the bits we keep having pop up. I think the crazy covid prices are still what people want because of course they don’t want to be in negative equity and want their money back, but it means they’re sitting for ages, even not needing lots of work. I’ve posted a fair few in the recent past, but our criteria is probably more rural than many people want, plus the OH is very determined it must be in Herefordshire although he quite liked Abergavenny.

@Cinnamontoast have you looked at Talgarth? It's got a similar feel to Abergavenny and isn't far from Hereford. A benefit to choosing Wales over England (other than the gorgeous countryside) is free prescriptions.

My OH is from Hereford. He will not move to Wales and as my family is in Newcastle, I’m reluctant to add so much time to future journeys, but thank you for the suggestion.
 
As many of you will know, I live in Ceredigion. When looking to move we soon realised you could get much more for your money in this county compared to our first choice of Pembrokeshire.

I love it here. Our property was as cheap as chips (although due to renovation work and rising prices is worth considerably more now). However the fact remains that your money will go along way in the more rural parts of the county.

We're near the coast, and some wonderful dog walking spots.

There's at least 4 different areas in Shropshire that I have heard referred to as the golden triangle 😂, three in the south, one in the north. I've come to the conclusion that it is just a popular turn of phrase.

Depending on the quality of neighbour you aspire to and your tolerance for localised micro-climates, you could look at stuff up clee hill as they are usually better value
