Hi everyone, I'm looking to try to find a bin to soak 4 huge layers hay in (probably more like 6 layers!) at a time. I only wanted to spend £15 maximum really but obviously need something sturdy enough to withstand constant tipping but it doesn't need a lid. I wondered if anyone had managed to find anything pretty economical?! The problem is if I buy online and pay postage it makes it more than I want to spend so I'm thinking of trying DIY stores etc where I can pick one up but not having much luck at the mo. I just wondered if anyone had found anything suitable and reasonably priced? Thanks for any help. Lucy x

Dont know if big enough, we use a dustbin with two small holes made in the bottom, hay has drained by the time you need to feed it but has long enough to soak.

If you can get hold of an IBC container... I cut the top off mine (keep as a lid). Perfect for soaking hay - fill, open tap, drains perfectly. :) You can sometimes pick up the smaller ones too - 600ltr as opposed to 1000ltr. They are in their own cage so are perfectly robust and tidy.

I don't know if this will be big enough for you but I use the large Stubbs bin to soak my hay. I have 2 Stubbs bins and soak 6lbs of hay in each bin. I've found they have bee the best buy as they are outside and lasted through all that frost and ice without cracking or breaking.

Edited to say if you search for Stubbs large manure bucket £25

Sounds a bit strange but what about an old bath? My friend couldnt find one big enough to do her hay either so she went to the local tip (i know) and got one there which was nearly brand new. She uses it in the water to hold water for her ponies just a though.:D

I got a water butt from Focus DIY, its not like a normal water butt, its shaped like a giant plant pot, it has a tap to let the water out but isn't shaped funny like the ones you normally get. It was only about a 10 er if I remember rightly

Hi everyone, thank you for all your replies. I love all the ideas and am busily making a list to check them out! Lucy x
PS sorry that I had already posted this message and then posted again. The forum wasn't working for me very well yesterday and when I clicked post it said 'error' so I had no idea either of the posts had come on the forum!

go to your local tip .. they have stacks of old dustbins now that councils have issued the green, blue and black ones to householders. or you could be sneaky and use one or 2 of the council issued big bins .. i use my green one as a water butt!! as i put my gardening waste into the muck trailer.

I have a plastic cold water storage tank - is perfect hay bale size!!! it has a hole near the bottom with a thread on that you can get a end cap for so when you need to empty it you just undo the cap.

i went through the same thing but decided on splashing out on a wheelie bin - best decision made by far!

1 - very big
2 - easy to drain - because of bottom being narrower than top it drains without any probs
3 - easy to move around the yard

good luck

I use the large shire nets, does anyone know of anything that it would fit in so I soak, currently using a large bucket but iam having to turn it over??

Just as an aside. I was discussing soaking v. steaming and making a home-made steamer with wall paper steamer, etc. OH said that I should stick to soaking as water is cheaper than electricity. I think I prefer soaking too as there always seems to be a lot of dirt in the bottom that has washed out, which just steaming wouldn't get rid of.
