I've just discovered iron-on carpet joining tape. I have a horse who rips the rugs that the other two wear and it's costing me a fortune in rugs. I've been testing mending them with "gold standard" iron-on carpet tape from eBay (20 metres for less than £15 inc postage) and it's been brilliant! It's even foxing the rug ripper, who picks at any repairs that he can see. You do need a dedicated iron because the glue can get onto it, but you can get a cheap dry iron under a fiver in the supermarkets. I've even been able to mend a rip at the wither, which is amazing considering the stress it takes there. And it copes with dirt too (not mud, of course, but material that doesn't look clean). It's really quick and glued solid after a minute or so of cooling off. I'm so chuffed I thought I'd recommend it.

Thanks for that. Our boy ripped his turnout rug at the weekend and I spent an hour stitching it last night (not sure how long it will last!) Will definitely try this next time though. What a clever idea!

I'm a cheap skate. I confess I use plaiting thread or similar for most mends then canvas or material tape over the top in fetching green then waterproof spray over the mend but late spring you will probably find me sitting next to a pile of rugs mending, cleaning with hose and dandy brush and re-proofing. :D Saddo!
