Cheap fix if your car is leaking after heavy rain

For those of us who cling to their elderly cars, there often comes a point when you notice water in the footwell after heavy rain. This cheap fix came from You Tube and really works. Recent high summer temperatures perish the rubber seals around windows leaving them porous. Buy a roll of insulation tape and carefully cover the rubber seals. I have done round the car windscreen and back window, and for good measure I've sealed around the sun roof with clear waterproof tape. No more water in the car, total cost around £5.

Common problem with 1 particular brand of car over a certain age, they sieve from the rear quarter light windows, water then runs forward into the footwell. Then in winter you get vile condensation.
Easy to pop the window out and reseal.

A friend of mine did this with their old Cortina back in the old days, actually I seem to remember drilling a hole in the boot of my Escort hatchback. That used to fill up with water.

My current much loved 1993 Passat and 1986 LR 90 both make use of this solution, I’m still living in the old days .

This reminds me, when I was a teenager I was pretty interested in cars and my mum and I went to look at a car for her. It was a Fiat Punto. It was awful, a complete rust bucket. There was a huge (mug size) actual hole in the bonnet, my mum pointed this out and was told deadly seriously that it was an engine viewing window. No need to bother with popping the bonnet on that one

Never has on my boat. You squirt it on and it seeps down to find the cracks so you dont see it at all.

My blooming car has spring a leak somewhere on the tailgate.

I’m going to give the tape a go - thanks for the tip. I am currently using a washing up bowl to catch the water and get some funny looks when I empty it out of the car window before driving off!!

Another good idea is that some cars come with a little rubber bung at the bottom of the door. This collects rain water so you can get rid by releasing the water.

A lot of cars have drain holes around the sunroof and these can get blocked, if you google the make and model you may find some advice about getting it unblocked

Yes, ordinary electrical insulation tape. it is just wide enough to cover the rubber seals and leave a little overlap onto the glass. The sunroof drains used to get blocked all the time on my car, due to trees overhanging the driveway. Taped the bloomin' sunroof up eventually as I got sick of dangling off a step ladder half in and half out of the sunroof trying to unblock the rear drains with a wire coathanger. Now drying out the carpet - that is a whole new thread....Pray for a hot summer!
