Evening all :)

I was wondering if it would be possible to get a youngster for around £1000? I know someone who will be looking next Spring and she'd be looking for a tbx, to make 16-16.2hh max, between 2 - 4 years old. Broken or unbroken.

Have any of you guys bought a horse for less than £1000 and what happened with it, what do you do now and how did you come across it?

Thanks all x

Nitty is a full TB but she was comfortably under 1K as a 2yo :)

I think she is rather lovely myself and can't wait to back her next year :)

Of Nits? Blooming hundreds. She is the little grey one in my siggy but here she is

I bought my 5 year old tb for £300 out of a local auction. He's proving to be very talented both on the flat and over a fence. It was a big gamble but with time, patience and some tlc it's paying off.

Edited to add that Nitty looks so much the tb I had who was a two year old when I paid very little for her. Turned into a fantastic mare!

Easily!! I bought my girl (tbx) at 18 mnths 2 years ago for £750, at 4 years old she's 16hh and an absolute dream :) She's broken, going really well, perfect hack and has been showing with some decent results (last month in her first ridden class we got 2nd = me VERY proud :D). I found her on horsehunter, i think.

Sorry I don't know anything about youngsters and values but could I just say that I think Nitty is absolutely beautiful? What a lovely colour horse, please may I have her? :D

She isn't always that colour, at the moment she looks like this

and in spring like this

Aww, they really do look a-like. Is yours a TB too? :)

I bought my TBx as a yearling for £500, that was through word of mouth.
2 years later and she is a dream, puts the older horses to shame

So very do-able! Good luck :)

Hi, down this way yes, it is entirely possible. It is always worth looking at the FB page, can't remember the exact name but it is something like: horses and ponies for sale or loan in cornwall, there are some crackers on there for peanuts at the moment. I also know that the person who breed my youngster ben, is selling 2 yearlings and her sister is also selling a couple, they are extremely well handled, lovely horses, they would probably be near the £800 mark as, they have a fantastic reputation for breeding good quality horses and I certainly couldn't be more happier with Ben. Here are some pictures of him, they breed cob types and sports horse types. If she is interested I could PM you the link to the one sisters adverts and pass on the other sisters number. Plus theres always a bargin to be had in the west briton, and free ads down here often has a lot of horses for bargin prices too.

A little bit older than your friend was looking for but possibly worth a look

I think I heard about these, they belonged to a friend of a friend and my friend was considering buying this one, but decided to hold off as her mare is in foal. He would take a bit of work and gelding but this little man is gorgeous, I would be snapping him up if I was keeping mine at home but not while I am already paying for 2 at livery.

Another little cracker

So see, it is very very do-able! I am assuming your friend is local to you, thats why I have posted some cornwall adverts.

If they decide to go for a full TB you'll find something at a TB sale (ascot, doncaster etc)
Last week lots of foals/yearlings/horses in training were going for the minimum bid (£800) at DBS.

I bought Mr P as a 4yo (ex- racer) for under a £1000-

he is the safest hack in the entire worls, schools nicely and does some jumping when I'm feeling exciting!

The pony that I have just taken on in a kind of loan/bring on capacity was bought by my friend for £50 with tack (not good tack, an old tatty showing saddle, a low quality synthetic GP saddle and a scrap together cheep leather bridle) a month ago. He is 5 and it seems (although we don't know, the home he was bought from had pretty much left him in the field since they bought him in May, friend wrote to the previous owner but has had no reply) had been lightly broken for lead rain ridding and then turned away for at least 6 months.
He has a lovely temperament and has proved almost bomb proof. He is going to take a great deal of work but he is bright and honest, safe for never ridden young children and my just coming off the lead rein 6 year old (although she is on the lead rein with this pony, he isn't ready yet). He has proved to be a real star and he is going to make a wonderful first pony for my friends boys and my daughter is learning lots from the experience of bring on a youngster, she is learning how important clear concise aides are and quiet hands among many other things. This pony is also to be my 3.5 year old sons first mount. My friend would now never sell him but she could make a great profit if she were to sell him in a year but it would still be under £1000 I would expect, you should get a good youngster for that amount, you have to take a risk but to be honest, buying any horse is a risk.
I probably wouldn't have encouraged my friend to buy this pony on his basic information but he has proved to be a real star in the making, he is no show pony but (in time) will be a wonderful first pony.

Wow thanks for all the replies everyone! :D So it certainly looks do-able.

She said tbx and probably with something Irish but all things considered really.

Queenbee thanks for all the links - the last guy looks good! I think I know of the Facebook group as well, so I will have a look and see if there is anything. My friend is not a Facebook fan hehe.

Thanks all!

If you were much closer and looking now I could recommend a few... actually quite a lot, my YO was at a yard yesterday where the elderly breeder had died and his family are looking to rehome all the horses. Gorgeous tb and sportshorses (and some welshies). All passported, fit and healthy although not been handled much (but very friendly).

You could probably get 5 or 6 of them for that money...
