Hi guys! I need some jumps to practise doing courses on my mare but my yard don't have any. Can anyone suggest cheap and easy ideas for jump wings/poles? My horse will jump anything so the ideas can be crazy! Thanks!
Cones with the top cut off to balance a pole in. Have also seen two old red plastic roadwork barriers being used as a corner, and two pallets with the tops lent against each other to make a kind of tiger trap skinny. However of the last two they are fairly sizeable as jumps and couldn't really be made smaller. Tyres are another you could use - 1 up right supported by two flat on the floor with a pole balanced on top of the upright one. You may be able to get offcuts from people trimming trees to use as brush laid flat on the floor - evergreen is possibly best). Similarily for poles if anyone has been cutting branches off that you could strip the twigs off and use for poles. If you can get old stackable plastic crates from anywhere they could also be used as wings. I can't think of anything else right now off the top of my head but theres loads of things you could use as wings , just make sure whatever you use the pole isn't 'trapped' and can roll off the wing if its hit.
They are £16 for a 10ft painted and treated wooden pole. Compared to the stupidly light plastic ones from polyjumps its almost half the price. I'm about to order some myself.
Quick and easy jump wing, get a tyre and some mix your own concrete put base on trye and put concrete in the base then get a wooden stake and place in concrete until set. Then drill holes in wooden stake and you have one wing. You can get cups pretty cheap on ebay too.
I use dads old car tyres.. Or go to a car dump and take theirs as it saves them space and disposal.. I either lay them down flat and stack them flat, or have one stood up either side.. Works great as can be easily moved and poles just fall off
I have made a whole set of jumps from pallets, they must be good and solid, and pref have 3 sections to them if that makes sense, ie 4 x main beams on them, and then the slats across, I cut them so that I take out the middle part between the second and third beams, I use the wood slats from the middle part to make the feet, drill hols down both the uprights (then you can make a narrow spread) I got cups from a guy online, then I use half round fence rails as ground poles because they dont roll, and I use full round poles as poles, I get these from the local saw mill.
Our local timber/fencing supplier does 12 foot, 4 inch, treated jump poles (unpainted) for £8 + VAT. We then painted them with shed treatment to get a contrast colour.
Thanks everyone for your amazing ideas, I am going to get some crates, tyres and wooden poles and possibly make some wings! Will post photo once all done!
If you live near a forestry estate and they have larch plantations, you might get early thinnings. These will be thin poles and worth nothing commercially. I approached the local Forestry Commission and was told to go and help myself as they are not worth extracting.
there is a guy on ebay who sells jump poles, 8ft £5 or 10 foot £6.00 but he is based in Wakefield.
Have a look at your local timber yard for poles otherwise, jumps for your horse on ebay do cheap cups, best to get the powder coated ones though, they also make practice wings which aren't too expensive.
