Both boys have destroyed their LW TO and I need to get a couple more. Have searched Equestrian Clearance, eBay and local tack shops and country stores. Maybe i am being a tightwad but it seems I can pick up a decent HW TO for around £50-£60 in the sales whilst a cruddy LW starts at £45!!

I have tried expensive and cheap brands of LW and they all last about 5 minutes so I want to spend as little as possible. Have been searching since about Oct last year so am almost ready to admit defeat and spend the cash but thought I would just see if anyone has tracked down some cheaper ones?

Thanks!

What size do you need? Barnstormers have shires tempest lights for 32 quid, tho I always call to check stock. Seems quite reasonable. Plus my tempest although cheap have stood up in horrid weather.

Thanks all - eBay is usually where I buy my rugs but the ones I have looked at are either the same price as the ones in the shops and the ones I have tried to buy I have ended up with replies saying they are now out of stock!!

Will look at the recommendations you have made (maybe I have not been looking hard enough!).

They are very expensive for what they are though, arent they?!

I really like Saxon rugs or weatherbeeta ones. Not keen on Masta as I find they leak. At the minute all mine are Saxon and do the job perfectly well.

Really!! Well i didn't no that!! I've always bought 1200d with the impression that they are tougher, I just thought 600d was "less tough"
Thanks for that- learn something new everyday!
What a numpty! :)

is the denier not how they are woven?? ie a higher denier is woven tighter thus making it stronger and more waterproof. i find 600d are showerproof but no good in heavy rain. i do however have a 600d med weight amigo hero and its never leaked...?!

This is what I thought too. My 600d Weatherbeta Land is still going and its in its 4th year. It has now been treated with Johnsons water seal though so that might explain why its still going.

I also thought it was the Denier so how they are woven. I've got a JHL and weatherbeeta 600d light weight and a mark Todd 600d medium and none have ever leaked in heavy rain.

I don't think I own a 1200d rug , better add to the collection :D

Another vote here for Shires and also have a look at Rhinegold - i brought a 300g in 1000d - i'd definately look at these again should i be in the need of a new l/w - the h/w combo was £36 off ebay btw.

Do you not have a Facebook selling page in your area, op? I just got an almost new amigo for £20 and collected locally. Worth a try if you're on a budget, as there are hundreds of rugs on the Surrey and Sussex ones.

Check Preloved and also the 'horsey sales' pages on facebook,

I picked up a lovely JHL cleaned & reproofed LW turn out rug for £15 off one of the facebook pages...

I also got a Shires Tempest 180 - its been totally waterproof for my old mare in the absolute worst weather we've experienced in recent weeks...

My Shires Tempest Lite (I have two, I bought another as the first was so good) has been waterproof in ridiculous rain. It is the only rug my horse has worn this very wet winter, and it has not let a single drop of rain through :) Over Christmas we had one day with nearly 50mm of rain, almost constant heavy rain over a 24 hour period. It was perfect. It's 600D - as far as I can see, that only refers to the density of the weave, not the type of waterproofing - yes, the 600D is more likely to rip than a 1200D, but again, my horse is a renowned rug wrecker, and has not managed to destroy his Shires rugs.

His Amigo (which was 1200D) lasted about 12 hours

Another for Shires Tempest Lite.
I have a few from the Tempest range, including the Lite one. Fab fab rugs and fantastic value :D
