As the title- looking at cheap older (2000 reg ish) 4x4's

And wondering what opinions are.....

Leaning towards the Trooper as seem to have bigger boot space and I've heard Mitsi's are dear to repair (?)

Any other opinions??

FYI - I have discounted the Fourtraks as worried that with 2 big horses and an ifor the towing weight will be too high for them (?)- safety first! ;)

Thank you

Coffee and croissants for all!:D

Foutrack
is good if you can find a nice one most have been worked into the ground , avoid the 3 liter troopers the engines cost a fortune to fix , later shoguns the 3.2 are realy good , 2.8 drink diesel, shogun sport are crap .. try and find a privately used something even if its high mileage, avoid x farm or builders vehicles or anything thats covered with mud underneath or has a well worn tow ball!!!!

There are very few decent fourtraks around, they were very good tow vehicles, but they stopped making them a long time ago and the one's left are usually pretty tatty. The diesel one's would have easily towed a big trailer with two horses. Mine had a 3.0 ton capability.

I have 5 troopers, also excellent tow vehicles, with the older one's you need to check out the fuel tanks which rust out, the alternators go at about 150k miles. and the brake cables rust. They will tow a house, but nice one's are also getting hard to find.

I don't personally like the mitsubishi's any more, and I have now moved onto a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Thank you

I know the fourtraks have the towing capacity for 3.5 tonnes but as they only weigh 1.5 tonnes (kerb weight) doesn't that make them fishtail when they have 1x 600kg plus a 1000kg Ifor trailer on the back? Also the good ones and like rocking horse poo...

Trooper weigh 2 tonnes so should be better??? yes????

A lot of modern vehicles have been specifically designed to tow much more than their own weight - this is already a common thing in the LGV industry

The overall size of a trailer can make a big difference - a caravan is just a big bubble of air for example

I have a 3litre trooper TD SWB and yes we had to search for it as good ones are like gold dust. They do havce high mileage as they go and go and go. mine is a W reg but has been on a private plate and is a citation so has elec heated seats etc etc and i love it. it will pull a house, goes through all snow, ice etc.

I had my Vauxhall monteray ( which was an Isuzu trooper in all but name) for 10 years and I loved that car to bits. She was a 3.2TD and never ever let me down. She towed like a dream, and was a roomy vehicle. The only reason I got rid of it was because I sold my trailer.

I now have another trailer and a 2001 series 2 Landrover discovery. Likewise, a good roomy vehicle with excellent towing capacities.

I have a 98' Shogun swb, brilliant motor! had 2 3 litre trooper both blew cylinder heads, very common problem with the trooper. shogun not expensive to fix plenty 4x4 places online etc. i have learned how to do most stuff on mine. personally i dont like the 4x4 "button" on the trooper. shogun has more options like read diff, if u get really steep hills etc!
