Cheap Pergolide...is it possible? Pls help.

My old mare who's 38 has been on Pergolide for a few years, 250 mcg tablets, one a day. She has recently had a Pergolide review & the vet has put her on some new pills which are 4 times stronger than the old ones. Old ones were around £35 for a box of 100; new ones are £110 for 60...eeeeepp...

I am not going to PTS as she's still full of herself & doing really well, plus I need a field mate/travel companion for Trev...but £110 every 2 months...

All suggestions appreciated.

I believe there is now a different treatment to replace pergolide, because it is for animals, whereas pergolide is actually human treatment. Haven't been told what it is or cost or anything though, but may be worth asking your vet?! We've been told the old boy on the yard will have to change onto it, but he's not up for review yet.
 
I have just got 100 1mg pergolide from the chemist for £58. Unfortunately this was the last prescription my vet was able to issue as under the cascade system vets now have to prescribe Prascend which is licensed for animals. Best price I have heard of that so far is approx £90 per 100, scary! My pony is on 2 x 1mg a day.:(
It might be that your vet has given your Prascend, it could be worth getting a prescription from him next time and looking on the internet. 38 is an amazing age, bless her

Is your mare's dose being increased due to progression of her disease, or simply because Prascend come as 1mg tablets? If the latter, then my opinion would be that prescribing 250mcg generic pergolide would still be appropriate under the cascade. If her dose does need to be 1mg/day, then you vets have little choice but to use Prascend. £110 for 60 is expensive though - we are currently selling at £1/tablet as the drug company are doing introductory offers. Even when these are over we expect to increase to around £1.35/tablet, so around £85 for 60.
 
My vets are £71 for 60 Prascend. Have a chat with them about a discount or you can still get a script for it and scource the Prascend online. It may be cheaper that way.

Yes, she's been changed from Pergolide to Prascend... Apparently her levels of whatever the Cushings indicator is are still very high, so she does actually need the higher dose. Or at least, we're trying her on it for 6 weeks & then seeing whether it's working.

I didn't realise that it was due to red tape...thought it was just a brand name.

Oh dear, £71 every 2 months is still a lot of money... We've had her since she was 3 though...my grandad bought her from the farmer next door to his farm in 1976 for £200, & she's given us years & years of faithful/naughty service, so I want to keep her while she still seems to be enjoying herself.
