In one of the free mags in the feed shop there was an ad for rug washing and it worked out loads cheaper if you had lots of rugs, and i have lots of rugs :o

Only i just cant find it any ideas what it was?

Cheapest and best way (including most hygenic in terms of knowing your rugs are not mixing lice/ringworm with anyone else)
is hire a pressure washer - and find a wall or gate!

:)
You would be surprised what drips out!!!

I live in Surrey, but Georgie's Horse Laundry are very cheap, they will collect large numbers of rugs - I used to get all my friends to drop them at my house... but they are based in Robertsbridge in East Sussex.

in yorkshire, have got a pressure washer, have tried it before but like i said i have a lot of rugs, like 26 for one horse it would be drying that would be an issue (stupid august weather) and they'd need reproofing.

pressure washers can damage turnouts tho - i made the mistake of leaving mine with OH to do at the garage, came back and he'd used the hot setting and done a full car shampoo job on it...... :0 what a donut. Tried doing another under my observation on the cold setting and minus the shampoo and it was ok. Best home method ive found is soaking it in a bath, hanging on a gate and scrubbing, then hosing off again. Hard work, but saves on the pennies.

Ouch - if my OH did that to my Rambo, he would be finding me a new one! :P
just some value shampoo would work - Maybe hibi scrub for fungicidal qualities. only a little mind you - Bubbles!!!

I dont use shampoo usually with the washer. we only want to get the things cleaner, so they look good and re-proofer has a chance! my leg straps come up so very clean

Re-proofer can be bought and painted on with a brush. - even the Nixwax stuff.

26 rugs, might be a mission! - Its the drying that takes the time and space - Washing a filthy turnout should only take 5-10mins each.

Agree with the pressure washer/hose over a gate for the turnouts. I then reproof by brushing them over. Never had one leak, in fact I usually paint over new ones before they are even used.

Stables rugs can be a disgusting so I usually soak in an old bath in some soapy water before hanging them up and using the washer.

I've never really been that bothered as long as the turnouts are waterproof and they are not really minging. Its not work £17 per rug to have them done anyway. At the last count I think mine has about 30 each.

I have been considering installing a heavy duty washer in the garage though. I dont think it would take long to pay for itself.

I take mine to the local launderette and it costs me £4 for two rugs plus a bottle of NikWax Rug Wash and Reproofer.

I tried doing a stable rug in the local laundrette, I walked in in jods - not even with the rug to ask if they would, and the lady looked at me from the back counter and shounted 'We dont DO horse rugs'

so i walked out

I havent found one of those unattended ones yet.... ;) (joking!)

LOL when i was at uni we'd use the uni washing machines for our horsey stuff....... but i always got a real guilt trip when it was really busy and there was someone waiting for a machine as i unloaded my nice clean and fuzz-free numnahs, boots, coolers etc from the machine, they come over and load up their boxer shorts and bedding without thinking to run a hand around the drum to remove gingerninja's winter fuzz..... and having to sprint in the opposite direction if you happen to bump into that person on campus a few days later looking decidedly itchy in the downstairs department!!!

I wash and reproof mine myself
shove them in teh washer at 40 - run a hot empty wash afterwards

I then reproof them using halfords tent waterproof spray - works a treat and cheap as chips :D
