Looking at some of the cheaper, less well known rug brands such as Swish Equestrian and Ruggles, and wondering if they're any good? and how they compare to the more well-known brands like weatherbeeta? Trying to help a friend find some cheap rugs for her new pony :D
TIA!

I must admit the only rugs my horses literally don't rip to shreds are Bucas and weatherbeeta. I do use cheaper brands as a stable rug though but as a fleece I use a thermatex and as an outdoor he needs a very durable rug. But I guess cheaper rugs are good for horses who don't rip their rugs to shred.

for thick winter turnouts then i really only use expensive brands- wetherbeeta or masta usually. but for thin summer turnouts and stable rugs Derby House own brands are quite good, as are premier equine. avoid robinsons like the plague- they are awful!

I agree with the avoid robinsons, this little pone had it on for one night and I cam down the next morning to find it ripped to shreds and her standing looking very miserable caught up in it :( Hmm, not a fan of PE rugs personally, but will have a look, although pony is v. slight a PE rugs are usually quite deep so I think it may drown her (correct me if I'm wrong here!) She is a very smal 5'3" if that helps!

I think it's a false economy buying cheapo turnout rugs as they inevitably get ripped by paddock buddies, or they rub, or they don't fit or .......... you name it.

Most of my rugs are Horseware or Weatherbeeta. Had a Masta once (never again!) :o

I've got a Ruggles lightwieght turnout and am really pleased with it, it's very well made. They are very generously sized though, I would order a size smaller if I bought another one. The neck covers are also HUGE!!!

Would agree that cheap make rugs are a waste of money. Look out for places that sell "last year's colours" - (Hertford Horse Bits always seem to come up trumps and they are online). Also, if you are on a yard try putting up a "wanted" advert. You will be amazed at what some people have lying around and you may end up with a better make of "previously enjoyed" rug which has been well looked after.
I rate Premier Equine, Mark Todd and Shires. It all depends on the shape of your horse. Also look out for Slumberdown which are made by FAL. Great rugs and a little cheaper

From experience of having bought various cheap rugs from various different brands - any rug is only as good as the denier. cheap rugs are usually low 600D and therefore destroyed easily. I've bought high denier cheap rugs and they've lasted well. So far my firm favorite is Axiom's in the 1800D version.
