Cheapest hoof protection

Don’t really want to fork on proper hoof boots but think my TB needs to come home and get out of the flies/ have some nasty bits treated properly.

My farrier is due end of next week, he’s currently away but would need notice anyway.
Horse is currently fine barefoot and has been for ages, however at home he has to walk back and fore over some nasty stony ground to get in and out.

Would any of these poultice type boots do temporarily to protect his delicate little soles?!
Literally to and from the field. He can have them off each end.

If you mean the ‘bag’ type poultice boots, doubtful, he’d very quickly wear straight through the soles on anything other than grass or stable bedding.
And the specific recovery / therapeutic boots like RX, Cloud, are very expensive.
Second hand, easy to slip on and off sounds better, Cavallo Treks fine for that job.
I once won a new pair of ‘Waldhausen’ boots in a riding club raffle, which retail much less than most boots. They seem identical to some other German makes, Pfiff, HKM; and are basically rip off versions of Old Mac G2, Easyboot Original Trail - same fit and sizing, just Velcro to fasten.
They’d be alright too, and fine for tootling about, but not convinced would stand up to a lot - gave to a friend because that’s all she does.
These boots are sold on eBay, possibly in some saddlers? Good luck.

If not far I’d see if you can find any old carpet otherwise going to the tip and create a path.

I have thought about a wood chip or surfaced walk way for part of it. Its not far really but i know from previous times having him back here he go's from sound and i think will cope to "ahhhh need shoes on quickly" in no time.
Part of it os down a bit of road which the stone all washes out into or gets carried out in tractor and lorry tyres so that bit is bad and I can't do anything about it. Totally agree complete faff booting hence he will have some front shoes back on at the end of next week. I'd just prefer to bring him back tomorrow as his skin is really bad :(


Agree Cavallo's are good and would be perfect, Just wondering if there were cheaper as its only for a week. That said they are handly to have for the odd lost shoe or poutice.

I'll look those up Exasperated thnks, Wasnt thinking so much the bag type but maybe the Woof zip neoprene or similar 🤷‍♀️
 
I'm having same problem at the min with my boy,I've brought some equus imports hoofcast bandages which I'm going to try and put on this weekend 🙂

I think this is your best bet. They woud never be my first choice for a higher speed hack, but for mooching around they would be fine, and as WW says, easy to fit and easy to pick up 2nd hand.
 
I'd second some old Cavallos. Those Woof boots ime are useless. I bought one to hold a poultice on and it was split in two within an hour.
 
I like the woof wear medical boots. I used them as protection for feet without shoes between MRI and farrier. It is important to put a large over reach boot on over the top as there is quite a chance they will get stepped on and ripped. But if you can prevent that they last for ages. If just for walking in and out they should be fine
 
A pair of old Cavallos are worth having, if you buy something slightly bigger than you really need they're also quite handy for holding poultices on to an abscessed foot. A useful thing to have in the cupboard. I do agree that in the short term some old carpet might be cheaper, but then you have the hassle of disposing of grotty old muddy carpet.
