Hi
does anyone have any websites or contacts on where to buy pure CalMag cheaply? My currently supplier has put the prices up to quite a lot :(

thanks

Are you sure you mean Calmag. I pay about £10 for 25 kilos from my local farm supplies shop and they could quadruple it and I would still be paying less than 2p per day.

I think maybe you mean magnesium oxide, in which case I would suggest that you find a farm supplies shop and buy 25 kilos of Calmag instead.

Can someone tell me if Calmag is the cattle thing refered to as "dusting". I can get a 25k bag for €16.50. Just want to make sure it's the right stuff.

Terri

I get my calmag from the mart over here...it is the same stuff that is fed for cattle. Very cheap and lasts almost forever.

Terri I haven't heard it referred to as dusting around here...but I will look on the bag tomorrow and post the name on here.

I think it is the same thing. Guy said you spread on the ground for cattle to eat. But look it, I'm kind of a moron and not agricultural at all! I'm going over tomorrow and having a look. As long as it's magnesium I'm sure I'm fine.

Thank you!
Terri

Well I've looked on the bag and it says: MIHRITE Hi Spec Sweet Calmag...and it is for cattle and sheep. But have only just noticed the sweet bit, so I am now worried there might be too much sugar in it......:( Didnt have my specs with me so I couldn't read the small print, will check that out later.

Everytime I think I've cracked her diet something else troubles me!:o:confused:

I am trying to get my boy some kind of magnesium but gettin extremely confused by all my options (Im not the sharpest tool in the box :D) the farm shop has magnesium oxide which is orange powder fed to cattle, is this what Im looking for, its about £20 for a big sack, is this right? Whats the difference between this and CalMag?

I got completely confused when I was looking for a calmer, the vet told me they are all magnesium based and to try feeding just magnesium. I got a kilof of magnesium oxide powder from graven horse feeds, and feed 20g a day into regular feed. It has transformed my nervous horse in less than 10 days! I went with someone who supplied horse feed as I wasn't sure about feeding for cattle etc. Plus I don't think you need a big bag - you only feed (from what I have read...not an expert!) 15-30g a day, and can buy 1 kilo for £4... A big sack is too much. Try the links on the first page - natural horse supplies or graven horse or something similar.

The technical name for calmag is calcined magnesite and it is 85% magnesium oxide. I buy mine from Scats, who are part of Mole Valley Farmers but because my Scats had no idea what it was, much less had it in stock I ended up calling the Mole Valley helpline and they supplied my local Scats with 2 25kg sacks. They charged me £17.40 for one bag, which is more than CPT pays but still far less than you can buy mag ox for online and it does work just the same. :)

From my experience, the higher purity magnesium oxide (the fine powered, whiter type sold) is more easily assimilated and generally has a lower naturally occuring iron (Fe) content to. For some, like me, this is an important consideration. ATM I'm just finishing up a small bag of the courser, gritty, grey lower % Mag Ox. It has a Fe content of around 0.49%, which is higher than the normal product I buy which has a Fe content of <0.1% and I buy via eBay. Having tried both versions of the Mag Ox I prefer the higher % one; it is finer (so more easy to mix), is apparently more easily utilised by the horse and has the lower iron levels (which suit my horse).

To those that use CalMag for cattle/sheep - does it work okay for your horse's too? Tempting, as it's cheaper than high quality Mag ox.

Out of interest, how much do you feed per day?

We've just got a diet formulated by Forage Plus and need to feed 20g per day of 60.1% Cal Mag to one of our horses. Goodness knows how I convert that info into what to feed of something with a different % level of Mag. My mind is spinning :o :(

loads of us use calmag. Rockley Farm uses calmag. I have high iron already and supplement copper and have no problems with calmag. That's the first I've heard of calcined magnesite containing iron.

If your horse will eat it, some won't, it is by far far and away the cheapest way to supplement magnesium.

I feed 25 grammes a day. My friend feeds twice as much or her horses go footie, she says. I think others feed up to 50g.

It sounds a heck of a lot but my understanding is that it is safe, does not conflict with other minerals and is excreted in urine if not required.
