is thickening around the ligament in the area where the injury was normal?

My horse suffered a sligh sprain in her off fore just below the back of the knee last July. Our vet scanned it and put her on box rest followed by a programme of walk inhand followed by ridden work built up slowly over 6 months.

The area where the injury was has thickened and i can feel a hard slightly enlarged area there compared to her other leg. It doesn't change with exercise or rest, she's not tender or lame and there's no heat.

Haven't any experience of this sort of injury before so would appreciate some advice from anyone who's come across similar

I think it's pretty common for the ligament/area surrounding to remain slightly hard and swollen after recovery - I've seen a few horses with this, including my old pony.

I wouldn't be inclined to worry too much about it, unless it changes, but of course, you can talk to your vet if you're worried

My boy did his check lig and was never lame or in any obvious pain. some days it seems thicker than others, and occasionally there is a bit of heat.

however, if you are worried it could be more sinister call your vet as it is better to be safe than sorry.

My boy did his at the end of August last year, where it attaches to the deep flexor tendon - he has been off work for 5 months and is now coming back into work slowly, with ridden work on the roads for 3 months building to small amounts of trot.

He has a definate swelling at the back of his knee which does not really change in size.

My friends horse did exactly the same injury at about the same time and he also has a slight swelling that has not gone down.

Recent scans on both horses show that they have mended fine and the vets both said that the swelling would probably never go away.

Hope this helps

Hen did his at the start of December. He had a tear at the insertion of the check ligament, but it was a small tear caught very early.

His has completely filled in and we are now onto strengthening work with some cantering, he has his final scan at the start of April.

He has a slight thickening, just below his knee, but it is only noticable if you go looking for it, and are very paranoid about lumps and bumps.
