Can anyone please provide any advice or experiences with a check ligament issue? I have a wonderful 16 year old 16.1 Irish gelding who has been plagued for various reasons with an off fore check ligament issue over the last two years. Having got him right, it’s causing problems again. He’s never had a single days lameness with it, but it gets hot and enlarged and it’s susceptible to showing a small hole within it and tear on the outer edge. So far he’s had periods of box rest and two lots of laser treatment. He also has remedial showing of the hoof on that leg to support the ligaments plus collagen as a supplement. Are there are any possible treatments or options or has anyone had any success with any particular approach when dealing with this eg. box rest / turning away / prp etc or absolutely anything whatsoever that has helped in any way? Thank you!

Hi,

My boy injured his check ligament at the back end of 2020, which was a small area of remodeled ligament with no heat, no lameness and just a small pea-sized lump. I was advised to keep him in, keep him bandaged, administer cold therapy (sexy term for ice packs) at least twice a day, bute morning and evening for the inflammation, laser therapy and to re-scan in 8 weeks. However, he tore the entire ligament top to bottom at week 7 being zc v. That took a whole year of box rest, 6 months of physio and rehab and countless laser sessions to put right.

Fast forward two years and the other check ligament failed, which apparently is normal once one goes as bad as it did due to overcompensating and transferring the stress from two limbs to one. This one was only a small hole through the ligament and after 8 weeks on box rest, it was healed sufficiently enough to start rehab.

The key to it for us has been box resting until the ligament is healed and then careful rehab to build the ligament and surrounding structures back up slowly. We started from 5 minutes of gentle walking, adding a minute each day up to 45mins, then adding a minute of trot each day up to 10 minutes - bearing in mind, my boy is retired so only needed to be field sound. During the rehab period, we had laser sessions fortnightly and scans at 6 - 8 week intervals.

My vet said to me this will be the most boring injury i'll ever have to deal with but if not treated properly, can keep on reoccurring and create a lot of scar tissue.

As boring and long-winded as it is, stick with it and hopefully, the tricky little check ligament won't rear it's ugly head again.

Feel free to DM me if you want any more info!
