So my beloved mare, my bezzie mate and excuse for my constant lateness and lack of funds is a bit broken. shes been broken for about three years and im so excited and worried as we are trying a brand new treatment to try and fix her and i want to share it with everyone in case anyone else has been in the same boat!
I started working for this brand new company at the start of the year after meeting the team through my old job and was amazed by what they had done with a nasty granulated old leg wound with a pony that i had watched have it done. I am so lucky that they offered to treat my old bean last week. Its a bit experimental as they haven't done an injury this old before so we dont know whats going to happen. Fingers and hooves crossed it does. I'm not bothered if its not perfect but if it means she is more comfortable in the rest of her years its going to be worth it.
Her nearside fore check ligament on the scan looked like eton mess and the vet Dr Tim Watson is in charge of her care, which makes me feel super relieved.
We have used a new treatment called Lipogems Equine where they take some fat from their bums (bit of liposuction) then it is processed in the special Lipogems canister which activates the healing potential of all kinds of cells. This fat tissue is then injected into where the damaged ligament/tendon/injury. The new tissue then regenerates the injury. Its so clever, and it didnt take long at all and even though she was sedated (she isnt a fan of stocks :() she wasnt at all sore afterwards....a lot of 'where is my food' neighing, so i knew she wasnt bothered by the whole thing.
Will try and post some pictures to show how she is getting on....

this is already being done with PRP (platelet rich plasma) where they separate the plasma from the blood and inject it into the injured area of tendon or ligament. It is a good treatment plan for suspensory desmitis.I've just googled it and it says its a better success rate than PRP. I wish you and all the vets using this new treatment the very best of luck and success with this new innovative regeneration treatment.

I looked at PRP and spoke to loads of friends, but i didnt feel that the feedback was as positive as i would have liked. The difference it think with this kind of treatment as the fat that is injected, once its been processed, contains cells that will actually regenerate the injury, rather than just support the healing. The vet explained it to me really well - he said imagine you get kicked, and you end up with a really nasty bruise, what happens inside are these cells 'pericytes' realise there has been damage and they go to where the injury is and then they 'tell' the other cells what they need to fix, they become MSC cells, which are like the regenerative managers in the body. So when the fat is processed its like it replicates the kick you got, then they inject it back into the injury and they get to work! The science is a bit baffling but i want to see what it does.
He also said they did an eventer 7 months ago with a really bad leg, and its not only been back in training it came second in a 2 star event in Europe...that sold it to me for my old bean!
